Fun roll find

GritsManGritsMan Posts: 2,599 ✭✭✭
Was looking through some quarter rolls last night with my 7 year-old. I'd brought them back from Alabama, hoping to get some more Ps, when my son asked, "Dad, only pennies and nickels have 'S' mintmarks, right?"
"Pretty much," I said.
"Only the proof quarters have S's, right?"
"Yes."
Whereupon he proudly handed me a Kentucky 'S' proof quarter--our first proof in looking through rolls. We were both very tickled by the find, and I of course was very proud that he was the one who found it. I probably would have skipped right over it.
Of course, you always wonder HOW such a quarter got into circulation, but still a fun find nonetheless.

BTW, in the past 6 months, we have collected a complete set of the clads from rolls EXCEPT for the '69-P. If you guys haven't done this with your kids yet, time's a-wastin'! These babies (the quarters AND the kids) are going to be gone SOON and the longer you wait, the harder it will be to find nice examples. I'm far from certain I'll be able to even upgrade to the FINE level with many of the Sixties and Seventies dates.

  • Wow, great job by a 7 year old to pick up on the mintmark. Sounds like a great way to spend time with your kidsimage

Thats great that you (and he) are collecting the 'old fashioned way'.

Have you gotten him a '75 to date Lincoln Cent Whitman Folder? A really fun challenge is to complete this set...from circulation, in RED. When I have gotten bleary eyed looking at $3K slabbed gold dollars......out comes the whitman and the wifes change can! Lot of fun to find a MS 1976-D!

I once put about $5.00 of impaired 69 proofs in circulation. I like to think it might make someones day when they find em.

Thanks, All. Ambro, haven't yet done the pennies, but good idea. I'll go pick one up. I wish the eyes were what they used to be--but I guess that's what the 7 year-old is for!
