Bank search of halves- results

I decided to see if silver could still be found at some of my local banks so I bought around a $1000 in halves from about 3 banks. This is the result of my searching:
(9) 40% Silver Kennedys from 65-69
(1) 1964 90% Silver Kennedy
(1) 2001-S Proof Kennedy
(1) OBW BU Roll of 1986-D Kennedys
Nothing that's going to make me rich but it sure is cool to still be able to find silver in circulation
Anyone else here find anything lately?

But the coolest find was last week. I went to the bank to cash a check and get some dollar coins for my mom. She buy a roll now and then and puts them into a jar to save for a rainy day.

<< <i>I've searched 3 - $500 boxes this past week and found 1 40% kennedy.
Brian, are these boxes you are ordering from the Fed through your bank?

They are from a local distributor, but ordered through my local Bank of America.
I think I might be getting the same group of re-packaged or processed halves. I've been searching $500 boxes
for about a year now pretty steadily and the findings have seriously dried up the last few months.

I cannot even find regular half dollars at the banks around here to look through anymore. None of the banks have any.
<< <i>A couple weeks ago I asked for half dollars and was told by the teller that she had none, but she had five big dollar coins she would love to get out of her drawer. I took them, hoping for a 1972 type 2. Instead she pulled out five Peace dollars. 2 1922, 2 1923 S and 1 1925 S. First decent bank score in months. >>
Besides pennies (those are easy) I'm finding a fair number of dimes in parking lots.

NewEnglandnotes that's one heck of an awesome score! One thing I have discovered is that certain banks allow their tellers to buy anything they think is collectable. Those banks I avoid and try to find banks that are either disinterested or not allowed to search their halves. Even with this, there are still tellers who are savvy about pre-65s but don't know about the 40% halves. I think that 40%'ers will continue to surface for quite a while simply because many people are confused as to what to do with them or just don't know about them. It sure is fun to find them!
<< <i>I'm with Ricko....I get mine from Chase and out of like 2500.00 over the last few years have found 1...one 40% half. The really funny thing is that was in the very first roll of the first 500.00 box. I thought I had hit the jackpot based on that but it was not to be. I searched 1000.00 over the holidays last year and didn't find anything...I should try another bank I suppose or just hang it up but I am a treasure hunter at heart so I am sure I will try again when I have some extra cash and hours!

K, I would start going to other banks I were you. Are these halves ordered directly from the Fed? They may be ordered from a main branch that has coin collectors working there and are picking through them as they come in.

<< <i>I have said it many times on this forum... in all the half rolls I have searched, I have never found anything pre-65. Just lousy luck I guess. Cheers, RickO >>
Why limit yourself to only silver? You a coin collector or not??
There are a ton of different Kennedy varieties out there just waiting to be found but you have to look beyond whether or not the coin is silver.
Here's a short list:
1971-D - Nice DDO's are found for this year. Some are quite dramatic and some quite scarce!
1972 - A DDO exists out there that could provide more financial reward than finding 385 40% silver coins!
1972-D - The No FG (designers initials on the reverse) coin is very difficult to find and commands a very hefty premium in the open market! Teletrade 1972-D No FG
This year/mm also has a DDR which is easy to spot.
1973 - A nice DDR coin can be found.
1973-D - Four DDO's are cataloged for this year/mm with one being very scarce.
1974-D - A very dramatic DDO exists for this year/mm and finding a circulated example can be very exciting.
1977-D - Two very scarce DDO's exist for this year/mm.
1980 - This year has a scarce DDO
1984 - This year has a scarce DDO
My method of searching is to first pull the silver then separate the 1971-1977 Denver and 1980, 1984 coins from the rest. I scope these coins individually for a quick check.
I've found several and searching for more than JUST silver seems to make the searching much more enjoyable and purposeful.
Even though these Kennedy Half's are readily available today, someday they will not be. Additionally, once a collector breaks out of the "it's gotta be silver or it ain't worth collecting" mold, then they'll start appreciating the opportunities that still exist out there for gathering collectible "clad" coins at face value.
It's all downhill from there................

Now that is the sort of "Gung-Ho!" that this hobby needs!
