I went bonkers for a Seated dollar on Ebay

BarberianBarberian Posts: 4,299 ✭✭✭✭✭
What do you folks think of this 1849 dollar (PCGS EF40) I picked up tonight on Ebay? I liked the look of this coin and reached a bit, paying 20% over the PCGS price guide listed value. So many Seated Liberty dollars are bright from cleaning. Does this look original and pleasing from these pictures?

I like the dollar. I once read on here that one way to tell cleaning was the inside the letters would be dark. It looks to me like the inside the letters are the same as the rest of the field. Cleaned or not it is a nice pick up.

I suspect it may be a bit darker in hand than in the photos. A nice type coin.

  • Very nice coin. If you like a coin, it doesn't really matter what the cost is.

Great snag, easily worth EF45 money.
  • Post pics once you get it in hand!

Very popular grade for type coins and a very popular date, so I'm not surprised you had to pay up to get it.

The 1849 is a little more common of a date, but a very good one to get for type collectors. The coin looks nice for the grade too. Nice pickup image
Want to buy an auction catalog for the William Hesslein Sale (December 2, 1926). Thanks to all those who have helped us obtain the others!!!

I like the overall look of the coin, but I am concerned about the origins of the hazy toning that forms a halo around the devices. Any XF Seated Dollar with decent eye appeal is a nice find.

To me this indicates it spent a short time of its later life in a kraft envelope. Though, I'd be interested to hear any alternative opinions.

Nice Seated Dollar. Congrats on your win. I bid on it but stopped at around PCGS Price Guide price of $650.

I really like the look overall but wonder about the hazy tone around the devices.

If you can find almost any of the Seated coins at the PCGS price guide EF prices you are lucky. The half dollars I have been chasing go for about double in many cases in the EF and AU grades.
And no I would not call that one totally orginal but at least it was not dipped to death so it looks about as old as it is. Basing my observation on the halo effect around the devices, makes me think a cleaning way back in it's past that has retoned.

Congrats on the win, I tried for this coin too! I was the under-bidder and decided that was enough. The halo effect is a bit odd, but that coin does look very sharp. The seller is top-notch too, expect your coin in the mail very quickly.

I was watching that one, too, but it became too rich for my blood several days ago! Very nice, love the look, enjoy it!!
