GIANT NGC Holders for Medals/Large coins

AnkurJAnkurJ Posts: 11,370 ✭✭✭✭
Has anyone seen these? I saw one at a show recently and they are HUGE. About 10x the size of a regular slab. These look much nicer than the rectangular slabs they had for medals.

I think for medals, I am going to also join NGC. Already have a PCGS membership.

We had one in our case in Baltimore containing a large early American medal.

Yeah, and I hate them. They don't do anything to enhance the medal. I was actually one of the instigators into the change, I think. They had wanted to do something, but I don't think they had any true ideas. I had approached them with our holders to replace the PhotoCerts. After 4 or 5 months, maybe more, they decided that they didn't want to use ours because they were not sonically sealed. They had even brought them to China to show some of their customers there. Together with NGC we had used tamper evident tape and seals and personally, I think they looked great. But I understand that they wanted the sonic seal. They also wanted large holders to look like the small holders.

The one large holder that I do have is only kept that way because I will be selling that one off soon. Otherwise, I would crack it and put it into one of our holders.

Yes, I've seen them. They're hard to fathom, what with being the size of a small serving tray.
    When in doubt, don't.

I have seen them, and I think they look really cool. Imagine having a plastic box of 20 of those!

I have seen them- I think there is a need for this and a market share to angle for as it further develops

Edited to add: I like them and I especially like the multi-coin holders

There's a $25 surcharge for each holder in addition to the normal grading fees from NGC, and they arrive in their own individual foam-lined boxes. It's not something I would do every day. Still, it's nice to have an option now to protect large-size medals.

I'd love to see a .25 gold slabbed in one of those giant holders.

    How cool would that be?

I'm coming up with 8 1/4" x 10 3/4" from that picture. They could almost slab a license plate in one of those. I wonder how many national parts coasters we'll see in those being promoted on assorted TV shopping shows. I assume the reason PCGS doesn't get into this is that they don't see a big enough market at what it would cost per medal to warrant the up-front expense involved.

I think that they are kinda neat. I have seen a few large foreign coins in them that could not have otherwise been holdered. Might be good also for die progression sets and year sets.

The only problem I have with these holders is that you can't open them and air them out. But of course that would defeat the purpose of the certification. Copper + trapped moisture can equal trouble.

I think that making holders like this for these large medals is a good idea. One of the problems with these pieces are they are big, heavy and soft. If you drop one there is a high probability that you will end up with an edge bump. These holders reduce the chances of that considerably.

I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

It answers the question about how they planned on grading the 5oz silver 'parks' coins....

please see tmot99's bi-line, it is far better and far more attractive option although the medal isn't "graded" and the holder costs more.
