Coin club report on the "dumb" coins presentation

Well, the mystery is solved. Dumb coins is a term used to describe coins that are missing the denomination, the year, or the country. The most famous American example is the 1883 Liberty "no cents" nickel. The only clue to value is the "V," and as we all know "cents" was added relatively quickly. Early American dollars and halves, all the three cent coins, and the Norfolk commem are other examples of dumb American coins. As for foreign coins, there are many. England never put their country on their coins and still doesn't. Coins from the English Commonwealth are the same design but have the country and the denomination.

Forum member RobKool made the trip from Long Beach to hear Walt Ostromecki give the talk on "dumb" coins. Rob invited me to the Long Beach, CA coin club which meets the first Monday of each month.

Show and tell had an impressive display of early copper, from two different people, including a Fugio cent, and a 1794 Large cent. The Large cent was willed to the man from his uncle. Wow.

I bought an 1878 CC Morgan at the auction. It is VF looks cleaned with minor scratches on the reverse. In hindsight, I think I got too excited hearing Morgan CC and paid too much at $55 considering all the problems. I also bought two items sold during the Bicentennial era, and they have virtually zero numismatic value. However, that is about when I started in the hobby and I have a soft spot for stuff from that time period. I paid $3 for each medal and that might be 10x what a dealer might offer on this kind of stuff if they offered at all. Still for the price of a latte, it isn't too bad to recapture some of that early hobby feeling.

For the curious in Southern California, search for "Beach Cities Coin Club" or "Culver City Coin Club" to find the next meeting time and place. Or visit RobKool at the Long Beach club. Or both.

Cheers.
