  I too grew up in rural Missouri...also about 30 miles from sid-ville, or Sedalia to the rest of the world.

  Barndog, I've always liked that coin and I love when you post it. I still kick myself for once passing up an AU-58 Missouri that had the same cameo-type look.

  To elaborate on njcoincrank's comment, these should have a very clean smooth cheek if graded 65 or better, and it's pretty amazing to see coins in 65 or higher holders with slide marks or hits on the cheek.

  What a cool,cool coin claychaser!
  With ya doc..inconsistant grading seems
  to have put a few with scrapes in higher holders..
  and yet some seemingly worthy ..not.
  maybe the big announcement will be a machine that can see all?

  The Missouri half dollar is one of the toughest early commemorative coins to find in Choice Mint State condition IMO. A lot of these coins were sold to non collectors who stuffed them in the overalls and had no idea how to preserve them.

  Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

  I grew up in Missouri and have always liked the MO commem. I've owned about 4-5 different mint state coins, one at a time, but can never seem to hold on to one. The price on a gem has dropped in the last few years. There is a beautiful MS 65 example for sale at Joe O'Connor's web site, nice toning and the price seems reasonable.
