Nickel and cent 1898 Trans-Mississippi expo elongated coins

These are from the 1898 Trans-Mississippi Expo that was held in Omaha. From what I've learned this was the second time coins were elongated. The first was in Chicago in 1893 for the Columbian Expo.

The first coin is a 1897 elongated nickel imageimage What I think is really cool about it is that nickels aren't usually elongated because they are so hard.

The next is a 1890 Indian Head cent. image

I thought these were a pretty cool piece of Omaha history thinking about who and why someone wanted to have these made at the exposition.

A history professor from Michigan came in the shop looking for such tokens or memorabilia the other day. Now I know who to call image

Nice items. I like them with the dates legible. Putting together a date set is easier that way.

Interesting. The machines are still in use in many different areas. Saw one last year at the Patton Museum in Louisville. (Yep, I made a couple of elongated cents there.) Cheers, RickO

Those are nice elongates. They always attract alot of attention on Ebay. This one went for $80 on Ebay this week.

The nickel is about the most common coin used in Columbian Expo elongates. On 1933-34 Chicago Worlds Fair elongates, cents were used almost exclusively. I happen to have one that was rolled on a nickel.

I watched that one but $80 was a little too much for me. image There was one with the same design with Omaha on it, that was made out of a barber dime that sold on eBay for $117 a couple of weeks ago.

Those particular elongates appear infrequently. But the price on all of them, the Columbian and many of the 1933-34 are getting out of hand! image

    Cool!
Always looking for attractive rim toned Morgan and Peace dollars in PCGS or (older) ANA/ANACS holders!
