You think?? Looks cracked to me just not cracked through.... your probably right. Do you think PCGS will lower the grade because of it?

Most Peace $1 laminations like the ones on this dollar I've seen are due to a planchet reaction from chemical exposure, not de-lamiantion due to planchet impurities.

If it comes back in a Genuine Only holder it will be due to Altered Surfaces.

It will slab in a Mint Error - Lamination holder, not in a Genuine holder (at least not because of the lamination) ... here is an actual cracked planchet:

I would like to hear what a peace dollar expert thinks. They tone so much differently than other silver coins that it makes me think that there may have been some unusual silver alloy mix used. I wonder how common such laminations are on peace dollars.

This coin actually looks much better in hand. I took some quick pics for the friday peace dollar thread yesterday and I wanted some different opinions on the coin. I was always told coming up that you grade the planchet and you grade the strike and luster. You don't bodybag a coin because of a planchet flaw, damage YES...flaws no..

    Retained lamination.

I don't know how PCGS handles such coins, but I view them as defective and, if it were my decision, would put them in a "Genuine" holder.

PCGS Graded this one MS 63... I was a believe whole heartedly that this coin should be in a 64 holder. It is super clean and the only thing holding it back IMHO is that lamination. If regraded under the error service it may get a 64 grade.

It is interesting to note that while you now believe the coin should have been a 64, in the original post you were hoping for a 63.

I agree with you.... I was hoping for a 63 and that was my first guess but a 4 sure would have been nice and Honestly the coin is all there except for the lamination/crack. I am glad it got into a holder after hearing everyone tell me that I should have sent it in under the error category.

I am surprised they graded it since it has a plachet flaw (lamination), which normally would get bagged.
  • Tdec1000Tdec1000 Posts: 3,852 ✭✭✭
Planchet flaws are apart of the planchet and in my opinion should never be bodybagged. They are apart of the way the coin was struck and is not damage.
