So these folks came in the store today with some coins...

this was a mother & son with some items that belonged to the father/husband who passed recently, anyway I bought a few items all very basic like Lincoln Cent Albums, nothing special, in talking it seems they had a 1909 s vdb at home, I said bring it in there worth a substantial amount of money depending on grade, a couple hours later the son returned with these........

a 1909 S VDB cough, cough, and a 1909 S Lincoln that looks chemically abused.......opinions welcome and appreciated....thanks!

    They are both not genuine.

    Are they for sale?

I'm probably the least qualified person to respond, but is the "VDB" always off center like that?

    Both look like added mintmarks.

How did the family take the bad news?

I am no expert either so I ask, was the S on the alleged 1909 S VDB taken from a cent of another year and applied to a real 1909 VDB cent?

Looks like an added mint mark on both.

Edit to add: I agree based on the above link that the first coin pictured is an added mintmark but I am unsure of the second. This really isn't my series but I'm always interested in learning.

Sorry, I don't mean to pile on, but my immediate reaction was that the S's were wrong.

The S shape is incorrect (no parallel serifs). Its position on the S-VDB is incorrect. None of the 4 obverse dies has any part of the S under any part of the first 9.

The VDB looks right. Everything points to added mintmarks.

How sad for the widow and son.

These are fairly obvious when viewed under high magnification. However, certainly done well enough to con a neophyte. Cheers, RickO
