Edumucate me. Why 2 versions of the Unc. 2008 $50 Buff.?

Why did the U.S. Mint produce two versions of the 2008 unc. $50 Buffalo? The boxed/COA version with W mintmark on obverse has some crazy bids compared to the non mintmarked version that was packaged in the blister pack sheets. Different surfaces?

Same reason they've produced W mintmarked gold and silver eagles with "burnished" blanks, limited mintages, and premium prices which they sell directly to collectors on the website. --Jerry

the non "W" are meant to be bullion versions, sold only through their "authorized dealer network" to us in the general public, with the exception of the celebration coin. the "W" version is sold as the uncirculated collectible version.... check the mintages. sorry for spelling and jumbled words

Comparitively, the 1oz '08 non "W" mintage is here. Quite the difference.

Mint site shows all sales within a particular calander year and does not reflect the date on the coins sold. May or may not be accurate depending on if any of previous years coins were sold in that year. Also in some years sales continued into the next year. Heres a very accurate site for final mintages on all gold eagles (except the 99W - unknown):

Pretty good site, you can navigate to all the other US bullion.

Huh? I thought this was about the difference between the 2008 / 2008W $50 Gold Buffalo. I don't particularly see that the $1200 difference in bid between the two is rational.

My bad. Wrong linky provided. Try this one, there's a similar site for each type Modern US Gold/bullion. The difference in current market price is based on the difference in number minted. 10 times as many non-W's were minted.
