    Try making a BILLION of anything to an exacting standard and see if you have errors. The sheer volume alone makes error coins a certainty.

    No, machines break and people make mistakes, thus errors.

    The mint has also installed riddlers and new presses that have made it almost impossible for MAJOR ERRORS to escape the mint.

    Errors coins that are the same size as normal coins will still get out like the no edge errors which I do not consider Major Errors.

    I think they did with the buffalo nick in the mid 30's just so the employees could get another nick.

    Some crooked mint employees were making error coins or at least smuggling them out of the mint before the mint management came down on them.

    At least some of the dollar / State Quarter mule coins were made intentionally.

    Back in the 1970s crooked mint empoyees made stupid stuff like Proof Ike Dollars on cent planchets. Those items became subject to confiscation.

    Yes, they have done it, and not all of them were "unofficial." If you business is running a little slow, what's the harm in making something up that draws attention to your product?
    Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

    Manufacturing industry best practices is Six Sigma. Even with that methodology in place, it still allows for 3.4 errors per million produced.

    ....i know the spotted coins aren't considered errors BUT they sure are annoying!!image and on top of that in the billions!

    I think it might just backfire on them.One would think it might spark interest and the westward nickels and state quarters probably did to a sizeable degree,its getting a bit silly now.

    I've always found interesting the jump in proof set mintages after the ....accidental...
    dime without mintmark in 1970 and 1975.

    But then again, the 76 was the new design wasn't it?

    The error rate if very low when you look at numbers. I'm sure errors figure into some executives bonuses too. --jerry

    I don't really think so but what I do think is that the internet has made error "discovery" a lot more available than in the past. What this translates into is that folks become aware of error's much more quickly instead of 6 months to a year as it was in the past.

    The US Mint has always produced error coins in both legitimate and some not so legitimate means and generally speaking, the more of a product you produce, the higher the likelyhood that some error's will slip through.
    I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

    "The Mint" as such is a well regulated entity and i don't think they authorize their employees to make errors. certain stuff that happens, like wrong planchet errors, flip-overs, double strikes, clips and that sort of thing are just production flaws that will happen. QA can't catch them all. as for clandestine employee fabrications, i have no doubt that they happen, they seem to be a part of human nature and historically documented fact. people will always be tempted by the almighty dollar.
