Pick the best of three 1845 Seated Dollars in PCGS Plastic

SouthcountySouthcounty Posts: 707 ✭✭✭✭✭

A few months back I posted my collection of 1840's seated dollars in PCGS holders and one coin I had considered upgrading was my 1845 seated dollar. Now the collection has three 1845 seated dollars in PCGS plastic and I want to get some opinions as to which example is the best. My collection focuses on original toned examples in the VF30 to EX45 range for the most part. Each of these examples has some pros and cons in my opinion, but if you could only pick one which one would you keep and why?

#3 is the one. The reverse strike and the overall detail is much better. Also has the most original look. image

All three are very attractive- I suspect coin 3 may grade the highest=- not sure that it would be my choice. I like 1 alittle more. Sell me oneimage

I guess I'd take #3 based on these photos, but it is not an easy decision.

#2 is the lowest grade, but the most eye appeal.

I like #3 best and I think it's the highest graded.
I like #1 next and I think it's very close in grade to #1.
That leaves #2, which isn't a bad coin but it's a bit too light in color for my taste. I think it's the slightly lowest grade of the group.
    When in doubt, don't.

1,3 then 2. I like them all. But if you were so generous to have a giveaway then I want them in the order given.

I think I also prefer #3. #1 looks a little splotchy and #2 looks better than most Seated Dollars in this grade, but of these three it looks the most "messed with".

Of course, when it comes to Seated Dollars in the XF range, how many of them really are 100% original? Probably about 12.

Obviously #3 is the highest grade with the most detail/definition. Then #1, then #2.

#3 shows circulation nicks more but that doesn't bother me a bit. I like its over all look the most though I'd be thrilled to have any of them.

3 looks like a higher grade so I would probably take that (since it also has nice eye appeal.) Based strictly on eye appeal, I would take #1. I don't care much for #2.

Id be all over number 2. Ewwwww.image

It has the most even looking color and the surfaces look issue free for the most part.

#1 is my least favorite by far. The area above the eagle's head seems to be lightly wiped, or missing some of its original toning. I also don't like the look of the obverse patina. #2 is a real nice coin, and I like the overall look and color of its surfaces. However, #3 is also an original coin, but with much better overall sharpness, especially on the shield. #3 gets my vote, even though its toning may be a touch on the dark side for some people.

    Hi there,

3 here as well - for the reasons already mentioned. One looks problematic and 2 has no character to me anyway.

Post the prices/grades and let us vote again.

I think 3 is the most original, but I like #1 better (from the pic as opposed to in hand).

#2 cleaned with dip on a Q-tip 25 years ago; #1 cleaned with something similar 75 years ago (but I like it anyway).

#3 is highest grade, but i do not like the toning. It almost looks like it had black paint on it. I don't think any are 100% original surface, but none are really too bad. I'd keep all three and see if one grows on you more than the others.

Ummm for this date in XF i'd choose none of the above. They come around more than their "semi-key" status would make you think in grades up to MS-62.

Wait for one to pop up with this look (it's an 1859-o...), they ARE out there for the 1845...

As for the three coins in the OP, the first coin looks like trouble imho. The reverse wear does not match up correctly with what normal wear would look like. And i know it started out with a weak strike, but the wear pattern still looks 'wrong' to me.

3 looks like it has the highest grade and best strike so I would choose that one but the downside on it for me is the toning.

Just on eye appeal, #2 looks too light, and #1 has some splotchiness on the obverse that I don't like. I'm not 100% for #3 (something in the back of my mind about the dark toning coming and going in the fields the devices, rather than being consistent throughout the fields near the devices) but it's the best of the bunch. That said, I'd probably keep looking for one evenly dark example.

I'm partial to #3 because of the crust and the detail; any of them would be an upgrade from my VF example, which led a very hard life.

I like the look of coin #2 the best. I'm not crazy about the toning patterns on the other 2 coins. Here's an image of my 1845 Seated dollar, certified by PCGS, AU-50.

No disrespect, but Barberman's coin is far superior to any of the OP's 3 in both originality and eye appeal.
