Sending Priority Mail and Registered - not so quick

Arrival at Unit, February 22, 2010, 7:03 am, NEWPORT BEACH, CA 92658
Processed through Sort Facility, February 12, 2010, 8:47 pm, WEST PALM BEACH, FL 33406

It has been mentioned here a number of times that if you are shipping via registered mail, adding priority is a waste. It does not speed up the registered mail process.

Priority Registered and First Class Registered get processed the same way.

The only difference between Priority Mail and first class for mail under 13 ounces is the expensive decoration on the packaging.

Correct...but they mandate Priority if the package is over 13 oz.

If your package is under 13 oz. and you choose Priority it is a definite waste of cash

Registered Priority Mail only affords a nice box to use! Otherwise delivery times are as erratic as ever.

My advice is to go express insured. I
I've used that for the past 3 years with no problems at all.

Priority Mail insured works just as well.

If you are concerned over the security of your submission, then continue with Registered and just deal with the turn around times.

I must be lucky as most priority flat rate boxes that I ship off get to the person within 2-3 days.

If your Registered package is over certain weight or size dimensions then Priority rates are added to the package, but it does not travel any faster through the system.

But a Priority Flat Rate Box (Small or Medium) makes a HUGE difference when shipping heavy items by Registered service. I've shipped Registered articles in a Medium Flat Rate Priority box, where the clerks always remarked
that my savings on postage were $100 +.

I just accumulate raw coins 'til the next Coins Expo to drop them off at the PCGS/NGC table! I call it: "THE FREE REGISTERED EXPRESS LESS THAN NEXT DAY" service, unfortunately this special service is only available at selected locations!

I doubt it... a 70lb package (max weight) going coast to coast is $111.50. So if you stuffed 70lbs into a medium flat rate box, you'd save $100.80. The flat rate box only saves on the initial postage; all extras cost the same regardless of how the package is sent.

The savings I noted was based on a comparison between insured 1st class and registered w/insurance for full value declared.
