America the Beautiful Program - Pennsylvania: 2011 Gettysburg National Military Park Quarter Designs

These designs should evoke some interesting conversation.
I doubt there will be a big celebration by the forum on these designs.
The canvas is much to small to capture the essence of Gettysburg IMHO.
I know RWB is very passionate about the Gettysburg design.
Are the PC Police in the house??
I pick PA-01

All of them are going to be complicated to reproduce in Quarter scale.

I don't care for PA-04.
<< <i>#1 for both of them. Very brilliant designs and very touching as well. Can't wait! >>
I agree with this.
How are they gonna sneak a gun into Yosemites design i wonder ?
I can't help but agree with this.
Honestly, children handle quarters and do they really need pictures of battles on them? Of course its very important to be educated on our history but there is a time and place for everything.
A history lesson with images of battles should be shown in a learning enviroment (home, school, etc) not on coinage, imo. Coinage designs should be kept apart from specific events unless it is a commemorative coin.
<< <i>Cant help but notice its America the beautiful quarter program , yet theres a gun on every design thus far.Sure its the gettysburg military park , but there its again on Mississippi. How are they gonna sneak a gun into Yosemites design i wonder ?

Ummm, where do I start?
Guns in a learning environment like schools?
They aren't even teaching proper history anymore.
I believe they start after the civil war now.
Historical use of weapons on a coin is harmless IMHO.
Kids today have video games with every known weapon.
People kill people, pictures of guns don't!
edited to add: This should be a very intereseting thread!!!

I dont think the poster meant teach kids about guns in school , certainly at home is best as is a recoqnised gun club or range..ie..learning centre. Its not a debate over what guns can or cant do , its more "America the Beautiful" that is in question , scenes of war dont conjure up beauty was my point , they missed the mark with these ones in my own opinion.
There was SOOOOOOO much blood spilt at Gettysburg we must not forget the brave soldiers that were there!
<< <i>let us not forget the lessons learned from wars!

I dont think the USA has much retention in the learning dept then , there has rarely ever been an extended period of peace. We all grew up with it on tv everyday , now its on the coins ? It kinda smacks of a warrier nation theme so far , like the ancient coins with weapons on.
USS Cairo Ironclad
Cool coin, cool ship, are those canons??
All four are nothing but poor copies of existing monuments. The PA-1 is specific to a regiment, and completely ignores both Confederate troops and the balance of Union soldiers.
To represent our national park honoring Gettysburg with anything so trite, imitative and banal as the four initial designs is -- what's the right word? --- "pornographic!"
Some simple imaginings were presented to the CCAC and the Director (as well as being posted in an earlier thread and in Coin World.) Regrettably, I’ve heard little about collectors supporting an improved design - - -
Were there thoughts of illustrating a very large cemetery on one side.....and a scroll with a few lines of the Gettysburg Address on the other?
I'd take #1 on both, if these are the only options. But they should have been able to do so much better.
<< <i>i have been to Gettysburg and understand that it's perhaps the most important battle site in the World, certainly in the US, but i feel it(and the theme embodied by it) has been "Commemorated" enough already. is it the only site within Pennsylvania that deserves consideration?? >>
Why the most important ? There are many veterans of WWll that might argue the point.
In answer to the is there other worthy options , Yes , there were many , Valley forge for example , Independence park , i personally think the Appalachian trail National park could have been considered.Theres a dozen others from Edgar Allen Poe park to Fort Necessity park.
<< <i>James and Keets, you are both correct and I was wrong (again). I was under the mistaken impression that the quarters series was all about National Parks, but after a quick visit to the Mint's site, I see my error. >>
Indeed Lewy eh ? I think theres a lot of misconception on these , it doesnt have to be a park.Which opens endless possibilities for Pa , further pushing the disappointment in the choice.

<< <i>Cool coin, cool ship, are those canons??
No. Those are smoke stacks. The cannons are the smaller horizontal things coming out the sides.

<< <i>The ironclad is the "USS Tiger Woods" -- I think....well, got to check my memory.... >>
I think you should incorporate that somehow in your next book.
I've got the title: "U.S. Coinage, an Hysterical Perspective!"
Oh, and PerryHall.....I knew those horizontal things were canons!
I especially love the "rain doors"

Did any of you wonder why not one soul in the Mint organization nor the government in general, could connect the most obvious(at least to me), idea that somehow Theodore Roosevelt should be tied to these commemoratives? And, to do the task justice, it would be great to put this work on the Half Dollar, where the designs on both sides could be made into something for the people of the U.S. A. to be proud of? Missing this opportunity is, IMO, the biggest blunder in recent mint history.
There, now I can get off my soapbox.
PA-03 might look best on a coin, but how can anyone choose a single monument out of all those in the battlefield?
First, those busy detailed designs will just not show well on low relief quarter size coins.
Second, those are just not coin designs. Those designs are more suited for cheap souvenir tokens.
Fail
<< <i>Whichever one they choose, it had better not be the one of the park ranger giving a lecture to tourists. I can barely stay awake just looking at it. >>
Actually, I kind of liked the idea of the NPS ranger giving a history lesson to visiting children. Kind of what the NPS is, or should be all about.
That said, I can't see any of the designs for either state working well in low relief dull grey.

Fellas, leave the tight pants to the ladies. If I can count the coins in your pockets you better use them to call a tailor. Stay thirsty my friends......
That was more Americans, then all the rest of our wars added together.
Every Nation must undergo this terrible kind of civil war, to resolve all of the
outstanding issues, before a Nation can truly be unified. The cost in men and material
was terrible and almost beyond all human comprehension on the battle field.
Camelot
Thank you for the sobering reality. I like the first image but with a ranger interpreting the story. [ya, I know this is tough on a coin]
This IS our heritage, and the story must live forever.

Actually, from someone that lives there, PA-02 is what the battlefield is all about.
You could come up with thousands of different designs and thousands would think they all stink.
<< <i>Very discouraging. It is easy to see the frustration felt by RWB. While each design may have merit as a poster for a site or an event, they are not good designs for a coin. Cheers, RickO >>
I usually dont agree with Rickos postings, but this time I do! I also agree with Capt Henway, the Park Ranger coin sets the best theme.

Each year the Gettysburg Foundation lights a luminary candle on each Civil War soldier's grave in Gettysburg Soldier's National Cemetery as a solemn commemoration of the sacrifices made on this and other battlefields..
The Mason-Dixon Regiment actively participates in projects sponsored by the Gettysburg Foundation. Barry Harvey and Debbie Dull are the regiment's representatives of the foundation. They have helped out with various projects and activities, including the placing of luminaries on the graves. The Mason-Dixon Regiment hopes to continue it's relationship with the foundation and foster positive relations in the future.

Exactly, among the worst designs ever.A once instantly recoqnisable currency is being replaced by cheap looking, poorly designed, ill thought out trinkets.
I think something like PA-3 is the best you could hope for. We're lucky the PC staff at the mint didn't choose Jenny Wade for the reverse. (Not to take anything away from her, but it would be typical of the mint to choose an obscure subject for PC reasons)
MS-3 isn't bad either.
