You sure this is the 3 1/2 leg variety? I'm seeing the leg on this one, but it could just be my eyes tonight...

The coin I linked to you can see the front leg as well as it is weak. What is why it is a 1/2 of a leg made by an abraded die. They are all not the same, some are weaker than others.

Tdec, I owned one of these years ago in a NGC F-15 holder. I regret selling it. As I remember it though, the leg was weaker near the hoof. I wouldn't think there would be different "stages" of leg deterioration, as I believe (like 1937) the leg was polished off the die. I am not an expert on buffaloes, so I hope this works out for you. It's a scarce coin, although some have been popping up here on the boards. On the registry forum, someone just found a beauty 3 1/2 legger that slabbed AU-58! Maybe you can check it out and compare pics.

    This is a 3-legger (PCGS VF35). I didn't realize that a 3.5 legs '36-D was pricier.

Personally I prefer a full Buffalo leg missing. Seems so much more "final".

Lance, it's "pricier" due to its relative rarity. The 37-D is much more dramatic and popular, but even that took years to "catch on."

i've looked at thousands of 1936-D's and haven't found one, but my assumption was that the die polish was a bit more evident than the coins shown thus far. i may have missed one is this is the extent of the "missing" half leg. at that, the variety now seems way over-priced and over-hyped, not to say insignificant, but i'll still look for it with a better tuned eye.image

Check out the others on ebays recent sales. One looks just like my raw coin shown. I am going to submit it and see what they say. Is there any buffalo experts on the boards?

I'm inclined to say it's not- yours appears to have 3.75 legs... I suggest PMing board member konyekwest (Ron Pope). He wrote the book on abraded die Buffalo nickels, and could possiby give you a definitive answer.

From a collector's perspective, I would say you don't have the coin, although I hope I'm wrong! The leg does not look any weaker than the hoof.

Ron Pope's book is EXCELLENT! If you don't have it, I highly recommend it. Here's a forum member (Rich Uhrich) who carries the title link Rich knows these coins well and may help you with his opinion.

Thanks for the comments on my book guys!

I don't believe the coin pictured is the variety being discussed. The '36-D 3HL is characterized not so much by an overall weakness of the leg as by the "wisp" of a leg that remains. One collector that I know calls it a "peg leg" which is one of the better descriptions I've heard to accurately describe it. Most of the leg has been completely effaced, not just weakened. Careful study of the placement of the Mint mark can usually be used to verify the variety. Unlike most of the other 3 1/2 legged dates (1916-D, 1917-D, 1926-D, 1927-D) the '36-D shows little difference in the weakness of the leg from coin to coin.

Did you check out the link that I provided? It is exactly like my coin. Is there a possiblity that the coin that sold on ebay is not a true 3 1/2 leg coin?

Ron Pope specifically mentions that the rear leg is very weak for this variety. It's great to see him weigh in here!

I know how it is looking for something and trying to see things, where after awhile you think you see them

I would say no on your coin based on your pics -> your pics
    image

the link to the eBay pics you provided ->

    image

the same pic I added my pick-up points ->

    image

I have 5 pick-up points that are related to my yellow lines

1- field in front of and below head is no longer smooth - a raised area below making a shelf/line
2- the right front leg - splotchy and attachement area with big holes
3- field area behind leg has line/shelf from back of hoof up towards sheath
4- right rear leg near edge very weak
    5- mintmark location and angle

your coin has good mintmark location - and I am not convinced I see the other 4 points
which could be photo and lighting angles
    but probably not

If I saw your pic on an eBay auction I would pass and would have to see more in hand
before I sent PCGS $50 for variety (much less if you are a dealer I guess) attribution
    on a $2 coin

It's very difficult to be 100% sure from your photo. Look in your PM for a message I've sent to you. Maybe the best way to tell is to look at it side by side with a normal '36-D. There should be an immediately noticeable difference. The die markers mentioned are very useful, too. Another good die marker is the flatness of the tops of some of the letters of UNITED STATES on all that I've seen. The photo from the ebay link you provided doesn't show other critical parts of the coin other than the attenuated leg and isn't of very good quality. Both the Heritage photo and the CPG photo illustrate the "peg leg" description quite well.

This date carries a little more respect than the other dates mentioned. It has been recognized since at least the late '70s. The rarity of it is often overstated, tho. I've heard of one collector that has over 50 examples.

Check, too, for the mintmark placement. The D is leaning towards and almost touching the E in Five. As I said, get the coin certified.

I went to Rich Uhrich for his opinion regarding my 3 1/2 legger. I also picked up Ron Pope's book from him as well. BTW, how is Ron Pope these days? Has his health improved???
