I cant Believe i missed what McGwire said about Pujols!

Mark McGwire says Albert Pujols could go down as the greatest player ever
Sporting News staff reports

Mark McGwire is the Cardinals' new hitting coach, which means he'll get to work with Albert Pujols every day. McGwire, who admitted Monday that he took steroids during his career, told MLB Network's Bob Costas on Monday that Pujols will become "the best baseball player to ever play this game."

"His swing is flawless. His work ethic is flawless. He is one of those guys (who) is a grinder, he's very intense, and I'm just very happy to say that I'm going to be his hitting coach and sit back and watch history be made," McGwire said.

Asked by Costas whether the players of McGwire's generation in some way created suspicion about Pujols and other stars from today, McGwire replied: "I played in the (steroid) era, but it's very sad to think that they're going to put Albert Pujols' name (in with PED users).

"The man upstairs gives us greatness only a few times in our lifetime, and this is greatness being played right before us. I just hope people understand how great this guy is, and let's just sit back, watch and enjoy it, because if you're not, you're going to be missing it."

McGwire showed Fat Albert where the needles go.

I caught it at the time. More people than McGwire think it. It's just that McGwire has lost so much credibility, I didn't even want to mention that McGwire said it.

Case in point as to why I didn't want to mention, just see the post above mine.

  • ahh ...i got it shane

thats a shame that we cant talk about a great player without snide remarks....

there hasnt been a pujols thread in many months...
  • I'm just curious to know what the heck McGwire is actually going to teach Pujols about hitting.

I personally think that McGwire working for the Cards would be bad for Pujols' image in the eyes of the skeptics (myself included).

I'm just joking with you man. I'm sure Fat Albert has never used any of McGwire's needles. I bet Big Mac rubbed some cream or clear on him though.

he said that he is not going to help Pujols, he is gonna sit back and WATCH HIM....

he may be able to help the other players though...

Pujols was the defacto hitting coach...he took Molina under his wing years ago and made him into a .300 hitting catcher....

I can do that and for about 1/20th of the salary McGwire will be getting.

I would agree that this doesn't help Pujols at all. LaRussa is cares more about McGwire and his image, than Pujols' image. If I'm Albert and I'm clean, I would have said, "Coach, I know you love Mark, but there is no way I'll stay here with Mark coming to coach. I have had to deal with the steroids question enough without him even being here."
The best pitch to start a hitter off with is always strike one.

Big Mac has come clean, admitted his mistakes, and moved on. I thought everyone else had too. Steriod jokes were perfectly fine when Mac was lying about having took them, but I think its time those jokes stopped. Of course for the other liars out there (Bonds), those putdowns are still welcome.

  • While I always liked McGwire, and I'm a big fan of Pujols, I can't help but think McGwire is only there so he can make a late season at bat and restart his hall eligibility. Realistically if you take away his long ball, he wasn't that great of a hitter and I can't see where his hitting instructions would help much....Holliday hit worse after taking hitting instructions from him and eventually went back to what he knew and got his swing back.

    Somehow, this makes sense.

When did Mcgwire make the statement?

Before, or after he knew he was going to be the hitting coach?

Pujols is top notch for what he does on the field, off the field, and as a person imo...
  • I don't understand why it was ok for A-Rod, Manny and that Big Poppe guy to have used steroids. I never see them being bashed on a forum. Is it because they didn't lie about it?

People are still paying big bucks for A-Rod cards... why, isn't he a cheater also?

My post is NOT cause trouble but to understand the difference.

If McGwire ever lied about his drug use before this year, it was a very long time ago and very much refrained -- nothing I could find easily on google. When McGwire was hitting homeruns, people either didn't care that he was using drugs or were delusional about it. When A-Rod started to reach homerun milestones people finally took their hands out of the sand and realized there was a possibility he was using drugs, so that was already built into the price of his cards

Yep, I'm sure God himself made sure that he molded and crafted Albert with special abilities. He also gave me my heat vision and the ability to fly. Good genetics and a strong work ethic probably had a bit more to due with his performance.

Whatever McGwire says I believe him. Proven track record there. NOT. Now, on the other hand, if Canseco said Pujols may go down as the greatest hitter of all time I would be more likely to believe him.
