NHL Trade . . . Guess I'll need one for my collection

Don't have all the details, but it looks like the NJ Devils have traded for Ilya Kovalchuk from the Thrashers. Guess I'll need to get a Kovalchuk RC for my Devils collection. Just wondering who they shipped off to Atlanta . . .

Who are the Thrashers and where do they play out of?
  • I don't think it will be who but how many go to Atlanta. Zack Parise would be one of my guesses.

No way on God's green Earth Parise or Zajac are in the package. I can see Tedenby and/or Corrente being in the package with some of their young defensemen... I would be surprised to see any of their current roster packaged due to age/contract asside from maybe Oduya and Bergfors.

Now NJ has two reasons for people to watch them 1) Brodeur 2) Ilya... now if it weren't for that darn trap image

Was it not just a salary dump? ...Atl couldn't pay him?, last I heard there was half a dozen teams in the running so I would think that NJ had to give up something decent for Atl's future. I hope NJ signs him for a 3-5 year deal, I would be very excited if I were a Devils fan, when was the last time they had a PURE goal scorer? Good move.
  • Great move by NJ. Maybe they'll get more people out to games now and separate themselves from the pack in the standings (minus Washington).

Reports are suggesting the deal was Ilya Kovalchuk for Niclas Bergfors, Johnny Oduya, Patrice Cormier and the Devils first round pick this summer. Oduya is nice, but with Paul Martin almost ready to come back, that's not as big of a loss. I do hate to see Bergfors go, but at least they kept Tedenby and Corrente (their last few #1 picks).

This may be the biggest deal Lou's made in awhile and I'm guessing that to put Bergfors in the deal, he's expecting to sign Kovalchuk to a deal.
  • I think they said he wants 10 million a year.

  • According to USA Today's Kevin Allen, Atlanta forward Ilya Kovalchuk and defenseman Anssi Salmela have been traded to the Devils in exchange for defenseman Johnny Oduya, right wing Niclas Bergfors, prospect Patrice Cormier and a 2010 first-round draft pick.

Maybe after he sees the system and how they play and what Marty, Zach and the rest make, maybe he'll realize that 10,000,000 cripples a franchise because of the cap. If he wants that kind of money, he won't be playing in the NHL...

That's the word I had gotten about half an hour ago, except for the inclusion of Anssi. I do like Salmela coming back. I loved his bog slap shot potential on the power play, but he really needed to work on his defensive responsibilities. I doubt he learned anything new in the Atlanta system after he was shipped there last year.

That's what I heard on the Flyers game last night. They said it was the reason many teams backed away.

I think your right... maybe playing on a winning team with solid players he'll come to senses.

Why do u think Atlanta didn't sign him!!!!!? He wanted to stay, Atlanta wanted to keep him but the $ was the problem, I'm VERY curious to see what the deal is...

It will be very interesting to see what Lou has in store. Considering the discounts he was able to get Scott Stevens, Brodeur and Elias to take perhaps he has something up his sleeve for Ilya... It was interesting to see that he got Salmela as he stated that was a deal he regretted making last season, but he had to clear roster space.

According to published reports here (Atlanta) the Thrashers offered multi yr/100 mill and Kovalchuk was not satisfied with that.

So what would be Kovulchuk's best RC? I'll need to get one to add to the collection, now.

It was just reported this was a rent-a-player move by NJ and they don't intend to sign him for a deal (just play out the year)...
  • Maybe he can signa big contract like a lot of the other Russians sign for and then not produce again. There are a few that do not fit the mold but there is this one guy in Pitssburg that is helping the stereo type.

Anyone have a card of this player I've never heard of?
So basically my kid won't be able to go to college, but at least I'll have a set where the three most expensive cards are of a player I despise ~ CDsNuts

UD Premier is his best RC.

I guess I'll wait a few days and find out if the Devils intend to sign him. They rarely go for this type of marquee player, so given the salary constraints Kovalchuk would create, it doesn't seem in character for Lou to keep him. But then again, playing with Brodeur, Martin, Zajac, Parise and Elias and possibly winning a Cup might change his mind. Considering the prices some Devils have signed for in the past, it's not out of the question.

Kovalchuk is in all liklihood a rental. He's completely not a Lamoriello type of player anyway, as he's not interested in playing defense...not to mention he plays the same position as Parise. If Kovy turned down 12-years/$101 million from the Thrashers, he's searching for a max deal on the free agent market. At the very least he would cost NJ $9M a year and NJ has $41M committed in salary next season meaning they have $15M of caproom with Clarkson a RFA and Paul Martin a FA among others. NJ could conceivably resign him by backloading a deal, but it's not likely.
