Deal gone bad on BST: What would you do?

A fellow board member with 700+ posts sold me a constitution gold set and 2 gold chains marhed 14K and 18K. I received them and had sent a check in the meantime. In about a week I went to sell the chains and to my horror found out that they were not real gold but were stamped that way. I tried to stop the check but it was too late and I told the seller. He said he would send me a check but it never came. I have tried numerious times to call him and contact him on the boards but he will not answer. This is only a short portion of this long saga over the past month. What would you do? He is halfway across the country so going to see him is out of the question.
Thanks
Frank

If their username is revealed noone would ever deal with that person again as your reputation means everything on here.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment
Let me know if its OK to post his ID
Thanks

Just asking, but are you sure the person who checked the gold content did it right? Edited to add: since you're being given the cold shoulder, it's probably right.
Good luck.
But, I can recount numerous times appraising gold chain that WAS stamped 14K and it turned out not to be gold (counterfeit gold chain).

<< <i>I would have the chains rechecked. He may not have known himself. He should stay in contact though. >>
He very well might not have known. But if the OP is being accurate, the seller said he would send a check and did not do so.
<< <i>I would hold off naming the individual at this point.... give a chance for them to respond now that they perhaps know you have posted here.... If no response, or resolution, you can always reveal the ID later. >>
The poster stated "He said he would send me a check but it never came. I have tried numerious times to call him and contact him on the boards but he will not answer. This is only a short portion of this long saga over the past month". If he is being factual, hasn't he already given the seller adequate time to respond?
Had you contacted him prior to this date and not received an answer? If so, it would appear that he may be avoiding answering.....
buying/selling/trading here until this issue is resolved. With that stated, I recommend this thread be moved to the U.S. Coins Forum. It is interesting to note that the items in question were sold here, after the member inquired about where to offer such material and I recommended a commercial refiner.

I could care less about his ID, give his full name and hometown! so I know to avoid forever!
Probably not, though
credentials floating around as well.
I think it diminishes the trust and security that most all of us feel when dealing here on the bst.
I hope it all gets resolved honestly and timely.

There is still the possiblity he didn't know. It is not uncommon for Jewelry to be repaired. It's possible some sleazebag repairman sold him 14k clasps, or the person who owned it prior.
Sometimes I ignore people that I think may be dishonest. It could be that he thinks the Buyer is trying to scam him since the clasps were stamped. I ignore plenty of people hoping they will go away.

It doesn't really matter at this point if the seller didn't know. According to the buyer, he said he would send a check and didn't follow through.
Hoard the keys.
Thanks for all the support and insight. I will let everone know the outcome, hopefully it works out allright.
Thanks again and keep the trust going

Explain that there was a fraudulent transaction and ask him/her to see if they can get your check payment reversed.
The bank may have some recourse that is not directly available to you.

jnd1955,
Please elaborate on your "compermize". Are you referring to the deal where you accused another forum member of switching a coin out of a deal that he returned to you, and you kept $500 of the deal against his denial of your claim?

I bought a $1,200 coin on eBay and got ripped off. PayPal reimbursed me $200 of it.
I do like the gift option though

Then you should have contacted your cc company directly. They WILL do something about it. I said "paypal" becasue that's the easiest way to pay with cc. I wasn't referencing using your bank account via paypal.
