I think Don should add another Rule (actually, already a rule buried somewhere in the archives, but often ignored) about size limitations on pics in sig lines.

I think but am not certain the rule is: maximum 400px by 200px and less than 20KB in size but maybe a moderator can confirm.

I like the rules, but I am not certain about the point about another services' products. I understand what you're getting at, but it is hard to see when one might cross the line.

I just checked the properties on my sig line picture and it's 342x200 and I think 14KB so you may want to check your browser's cache because I recently re-sized the picture when I learned of the rule but if I am out of compliance I will be very happy to correct the infraction.
edited to add: I just renamed the file so there should no longer be a cache issue.
I've got a question regarding rule #4: "Rule 4) Anyone making slanderous remarks concerning any individual, any company, or any other entity will no longer be allowed to post. No more warnings."
Does this mean no more airing of incidents regarding eBay/PayPal and or making note of possibly fraudulent eBay auctions and/or possibly counterfeit coins for sale on eBay? What about the eBay Photo of the Day posts?
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.
I have a specific question-- whenever we do a guess the grade, I typically give the grade and my opinion whether the coin will receive a "second" certification from another service. Would that be allowed? This is a serious question. I want to be sure I don't trip over the rule regarding other services.

This thread appears borderline-OT considering the "New Rules". But since DW has responded serveral times to the posts in this thread, then perhaps it is a good conduit for getting clarification on the New Rules. I have some questions for Board Administrators:
<< <i>Rule 1) This is not a public forum. This is a PCGS forum paid for by PCGS and provided for PCGS customers to exchange information regarding collecting US coins. We make the rules. If you don't like it go somewhere else. >>
Currently I am a PCGS customer to the extent that I subscribe to CoinFacts. Currently, the forum is open to anyone in the public, not just to PCGS customers, so I would say to date this is a quasi-public forum, operated by a "private" entity. If I cancel my CoinFacts subscription, will I be forbidden to post here? And that goes for alot of current non-PCGS customers too. If they are not currently PCGS customers will their posting priviliges be terminated?
<< <i>Rule 2) Anyone posting crude or vulgar pictures or language will no longer be allowed to post. No more warnings. >>
I'm guilty, posting a suggestive thread title last week and I got a warning for it. Message received!
<< <i>Rule 3) Anyone attacking another poster or making disparaging personal remarks will no longer be allowed to post. No more warnings.
Rule 4) Anyone making slanderous remarks concerning any individual, any company, or any other entity will no longer be allowed to post. No more warnings. >>
I assume this applies to libelous posts too?
<< <i>Rule 5) If you have nothing to contribute to an OP then do not post. Snide remarks and other negative comments will result in your losing your ability to post. No more warnings. >>
Please define (with an example or too - doesn't need to be explicit BTW) of where the Administrators draw the line? I've been posting here for 3-1/2 years and I've never been afraid to mix it up, especially when some threads get too political. I know PCGS has banned political threads since the OF was retired. But I have seen many posts since, and from folks who post here daily and sometimes hourly and not just your anonymous users like me, but from pretty well-known numismatists in the industry. How will you apply the new rules fairly to everyone in the community?
<< <i>Rule 6) This forum is about US Coins. If your post is not directly related to US Coins then this is the wrong forum. Do not post it or your posting privileges may be removed. >>
How do you define "directly related? It takes an act of Congress for the U.S. Mint to produce U.S. coins. Often times, Acts of Congress and the politicians who submit bills for consideration may become a controversial subject. But in my experience, such topics and opposing points of view can be discussed in a forum respectfully and intelligently. But often, such topics also degrade to the lowest common denominator resulting in the dreaded *POOF*. Will PCGS ban any ancillary discussions that are not strictly coin-related (from a technical aspect) so as to prohibit any cogent exchange with regards to the enabling legislation or to the Treasury and Mint operations management personnel who are charged to implement the Congressional Acts?
<< <i>Rule 7) This is a PCGS forum. Posts relating to other grading companies or service are not allowed. Those posts will be removed and your posting privileges may be removed as well. >>
Already answered part of the question in that you are allowing pics of non-PCGS slabbed coins to be discussed. And I understand bashing and promoting the competition is not allowed. But often times, especially for the novice, some of the comparative TPG threads allow for alot of info to be exchanged that is valuable to the collector. I can think of threads about how to detect counterfeit slabs that has become a recent problem in the industry. Will you allow only pictures of coins in other TPG slabs and no discussion whatsoever with regards to other TPGs!
I'm not trying to be picky here, but a good understanding of the new rules will help all of us to avoid accidental violations!
<< <i>Rule 8) This forum is provided for the education and sharing of information. Not as a personal soapbox. If you want to learn and share information about US Coins you are welcome. >>
Does this rule mean that if someone has an educates opinion on a subject that he should hold his or her tongue? I guess if it's just about education and learning then why have a forum at all? Seems to me, one could get all the education and learning they need from CoinFacts and other sources - you know Buy the Book before you buy the coin.
I think that education and information is a laudable goal. But there is a lot of numismatic intercourse that helps to shape the discussion and enlighten that might not fit the literal definition of Rule 8. Again some clarification would be in order to define what discussions cross the line and what discussions are acceptable.
<< <i>Rule 9) If you don't like any of the rules outlined above see Rule 1. >>
I like this rule. It remindes of the the rules about customers.
Rule #1 the customer is always right
Rule #2 if the customer is wrong refer to Rule #1
Finally, If I bump a thread from the archives that contains violations or offenses of the new rules, will I be kicked off? And if there are offensive threads in the archives then why not just delete them so some unknowing member doesn't inadvertently the new rules by accident?
Cheers!

I'm sure ebay appreciates help in taking down fraudulent listings.
Come on with all the questions. How about using common sense. This isn't a court of law.
As long as your post is related to coins then fine. This is the US Coin forum. There is also a World Coin forum. No one's going to be banned for listing on the wrong forum .... at least not the first time.

I think it was stated a couple of years ago that the PCGS Registry Forum was explicitly for "high end PCGS graded coins". But, what you may consider junk is something someone else may desire and be willing to pay for.
<< <i>But, what you may consider junk is something someone else may desire and be willing to pay for. >>
Absolutely right. "Everyman" sets, for example, where many dates+grades are worth less than the grading fee. I'm looking for a few such Walkers myself.

As do I.
Open public forums attract all kinds of people and IMO, its the responsibility of the Forum administrators (and every forum has one) to regulate what is ansd what is not acceptable. We all know if whats been posted is wrong but its the borderline stuff that really gets ya wondering.
Had I been required to join the Collectors Club before posting and participating and learning, I'd probably still be buying my 3 proof sets a year and babysitting a really, really aweful IKE collection. $199 a year (at the time) or even $49.95 a year is an awful lot of money just to say "Hi!"
Edited for some clarity (hopefully).

Wondercoin
Please visit my website at www.wondercoins.com and my ebay auctions under my user name www.wondercoin.com.
For some background, I stumbled across this Forum sometime in 2007 when looking for information on the First Spouse Gold in searching Yahoo. In the search results were a ton of posts from FLbuffalohunter about the series and at the time that was the best source of info. I had recently graduated from school at the time and until then was mostly just buying annual proof sets. Having some extra cash being out of school, I thought the First Spouse series would be a great way to invest in some gold and get back into coin collecting. After lurking on the forum for maybe a year, I joined up here and learned that I liked coin collecting way more than just buying the annual proof/mint sets like I had been. I stuck with the First Spouse series as planned, but because of this forum my collecting interest expanded greatly to certified collector coins and eventually to becomming a Collector's Club member and getting involved in the Set Registry. If I didn't have the free access to the forum as a lurker and then as a member, who knows if I'd be as active in collecting as I am now or if I'd even know what a coin registry even is in the first place. Thanks.

At less than 14¢ per day to use this forum the silver menbership at $49.95 per year is a bargain. And that was how I joined in my first year did not even make a submission during the first year of learning about coins on here.
<< <i>Wanted add just one more mentionable fact, I have pmed Don on a couple of occasions and have always gotten a reply and then the corresponding help concerning company matters. That is pretty amazing considering that the Prez of a large company makes himself totally accessible to his customers in such a direct manner. I don't know of any other grading company let alone large company where that goes on. And it makes a big difference to me to be able to have that kind ofdialogue and help. >>

I am not a member, dealer, or subscriber , so I may be gone in the future if they implement these changes.
And I wont be able to post anymore Awesome Photos of Error Coins
Restricting this to PCGS members only would be silly. Is this about Helping new collectors or about showing off high end plastic?? By telling new collectors they have to sign up with PCGS to educate themselves in numismatics is ridiculous. Such things should be free. This site will be missing out on a LOT of kowledge out there. I hate to break it to you guys, but PCGS members don't have the answers to everything and you might be declining a person that does have the knowledge. from joining the forum. And I know, if I don't like it, then I can find a new place to go. That's fine, I'll go, and I'll take my next years fees with me. Not interested. Feel free to ban me for this, I don't think I'll be returning anyway.
I'm a PCGS Platinum member, and Im curious if this real enforcement of the rules will apply to established board members who continually post whatever the heck they want, coin related or not. If the rules are enforced, I hope they're enforced UNIFORMLY.
The guy who came up with that saying Stu Leonard, a Retailer from CT. I met him years ago
Actually, Stew Leonard was convicted of committing a $17 million tax fraud in the largest criminal tax case in the history of Connecticut. He was sentenced to 52 months in jail, and he served his time. In addition, his store was cited by the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection for labeling violations and selling underweight products. On 2,658 items tested, there were labeling violations in 46%.

Does the forum in its current configuration add to or subract from PCGS' business? For myself, I've spent quite a bit of money with PCGS as a result of the message board and would definately feel driven off if that happens.
>>Actually I would love to restrict posting to this forum to PCGS Dealer, Members and Subscribers. No more anonymous posters. We are looking at upgrading our software to do that>>
IMO horrible idea, and i would hope you reconsider it
Limiting these forums to just PCGS members would not be good for anyone. If there are a few bad apples warn them and then ban them. Dont punish everyone for the actions of a few. This would hurt PCGS members also since a lot of good and interesting info and pictures are posted by non members. This would go away and these boards would be a shell of what they are today. I buy many PCGS coins but since I dont buy raw coins that need to be slabbed why would I become a PCGS member? My interest in coins has exploded since discovering these boards a year or two ago and its a shame that that will be taken away. Oh well. Also even though a lot of people here are non members the interest they spur regarding coins to other members helps PCGS anyway.
<< <i>Restricting this to PCGS members only would be silly. Is this about Helping new collectors or about showing off high end plastic?? Also, take someone who collects PCGS-graded coins. They only collect coins that are already graded by PCGS. As such, they have no reason to join PCGS, as they don't have any coins to submit for grading. Are these collectors to be banned from participating in this forum?
I would think that many "newbe's" would fit this situation, as they aren't yet comfortable in self-grading their potential purchases, and they rely on PCGS for that peace of mind. Once they get comfortable in grading coins, they could graduate to the realm of those collectors who do submit coins to PCGS. If they are kept from these forums, they will not feel welcome in the first place, and would probably forego any thought of joining PCGS in the future.
IMHO, prohibiting these collectors from posting here would be a travesty, as they could have a lot to contribute to the rest of us, and they would be providing the "fresh blood" that we so need to keep coin collecting alive. PCGS would also not be making them feel that they are welcome to join in the future, thereby decreasing future profits.
I think the potential for restricting it to paid people only is a HUGE indication everyone needs to self-regulate.

I have had a feeling for some time, that the Coin Forum was either going to be changed, or even eliminated. It had become either a soap box, new reality show/place to go for venting/ vexing, and everything else but a place for coin discussions.
It would have been a shame to lose the talents of Sunnywood, Doug Winter, Tradedollarnut, Mr. Eureka, Colonial Coin Union, Stewart, SaintGuru, and a couple of more serious posters. ( Coinguy is now back, but he didn't miss anything important).
If I never hear about another e-bay scammer, a piece of registered mail that is 10 days overdue, or or a complaint about the cost of a published price guide, it will be too soon.
Don Willis is a smart businessman, and an accomplished collector/dealer. I wish him well, in the changes that have been made, with more to come.

BTW, this is an example of the symbiotic relationship between PCGS and the general public. Here a single post ("floating the porverbial baloon idea) can garnish a wide range of potential customer response, ergo the "focus group", "market research", etc. This is an example of why PCGS should continue to keep these boards open to the general public. After all, if you restrict the content to only paying members, then I think you restrict the feedback to a very narrow perspective idiology of the hobby.
While I recognize that I exist here on these boards as a guest of PCGS. I also realize that as I benefit personnally from the knowledge disseminated here, that PCGS benefits exponentially from the value of the content provided here. I don't charge for my knowledge (for what it's worth), but many established numismatists also post here for free and PCGS gets free numismatic advice and a "thumb on the pulse of the market" in exchange for providing the forums.
I know that management is an evolution at PCGS, but they should continue to offer up the forums to anyone for free, because it behooves themselves to do so. Afterall, PCGS corporation derives more benefits from alowing me and others like me to post our opinions here moreso than we as individuals benefit, even if it is no cost to us!

Me too. Or at least let the ones that are already here stay, as along as they adhere to the rules. Probably wouldn't be fair, though, to those that couldn't join. If this does happen, I'll probably be out before I know it, so let me go ahead now and say that I've had a lot of fun on here, learned a lot, and hopefully passed some knowledge on to others. My collecting doesn't involve grading coins, so I have no need for PCGS's services. I appreciate the time here that they've given me. Hopefully I'll be allowed to stay!

I don't submit coins for grading but I have the silver membership out of appreciation for this forum. MJ
Walker Proof Digital Album Fellas, leave the tight pants to the ladies. If I can count the coins in your pockets you better use them to call a tailor. Stay thirsty my friends......
Regardless of my own personal opinions about whether they should do it or not, I can easily see the viewpoint of making access to these boards by membership only, even if it did reduce the number of people who participate in it and the amount of information that is contributed.
Take a step back, imagine you're in PCGS' shoes, and try to look at this from their perspective:
PCGS is a for-profit company. They provide services and they rightfully charge for them. Besides being fun, the insight and information we share on these boards deliver value to us. Providing the boards involves time and expense, so why should PCGS not charge for it -- whether in the form of an access fee or requiring a Collector's Club membership?

How will you apply the new rules fairly to everyone in the community?

How do you define "directly related? It takes an act of Congress for the U.S. Mint to produce U.S. coins. I can think of threads about how to detect counterfeit slabs that has become a recent problem in the industry. I think that education and information is a laudable goal. But there is a lot of numismatic intercourse that helps to shape the discussion and enlighten that might not fit the literal definition of Rule 8.

By telling new collectors they have to sign up with PCGS to educate themselves in numismatics is ridiculous. Such things should be free.

and that's all I have to say 'bout that!
