My Mantle has arrived!

First off, I owe a huge thanks to Felicia, PoppaJ, and Steve for insights shared over the past year around the 1952 Topps Mantle, sellers they've transacted with, and tell-tale signs of fakes. I learn new things all the time in this forum related to vintage, and I have so many of you to thank for that.

I've been researching, watching, and learning about the '52 Mantle for the past year and have been waiting for the right opportunity. It finally presented itself recently, and I wanted to share with you guys.

I ended up purchasing Cohocorp's remaining PSA 4 Mantle which I'm thrilled with. It took quite a while to get the deal finished given the price negotiations, paypal, shipping issues, reholdering, etc, but I was really impressed with Pat's honesty and level of professionalism throughout the process.

I'm very excited to finally have one. This is one card I will enjoy for a long, long time. Maybe someday I can pass it down to my new son.

Congratulations!!! I don't really collect baseball anymore, but I would still love to have a 52 Mantle. I still remember sitting with my dad, and him telling me about having a 52 Mantle when he was a kid in Denver. That is a legendary card, and to have one (and plan to pass it along to your son), must truly be a wonderful feeling!

We named him Anson. It only took us two weeks after birth to hash it out.

Trouble is...I have the Happy Days theme song ringing in my brain...

    image

I've tried calling him Potsie a few times, and let's just say that was a bad idea. And, no, we didn't name him after Potsie. It's a family name from way back that I've always liked.

That's the first thing that popped in my head too. Still a good choice on both. Congrats again. You can tell him your tax savings for the late 2009 birth helped pay for Mick. It'll make a good story to tell his girlfriend in 2029.

Not only is it fake, but it's also trimmed (JUST KIDDING). That's the very epitome of a dream card. Enjoy it! image

Hopefully he won't grow up to be like Anson Bunker. "The Bloody Hand," the perpetrator of no less than fifteen cold-blooded murders, amongst which were the great Nathan murder of New York City, the murders of his three wives and several others in various parts of the country.

If you ever set up at a card show, you could make a killing by charging $2 to $5 to get their picture taken while holding that card. They were doing that at the National this year (can't remember which booth, I'm sure someone here remembers). They were letting people with a VIP Pass choose a PSA 10 Mantle or one of the Wagner cards to have their picture taken while holding it. I know I'd drop a Lincoln (at least) to have that opportunity. image

Great card. And the first thing I thought of when I heard your son's name was Cap Anson. Much better than Potsie. image

Big cough "craigslist"....................................im kidding! Awesome iconic card. I hope it gets passed down for years to come, congrats!
  • Once upon a time my wife came in and asked where I was in regards to my collection. She asked if my list of "must have" cards had got to the point of one or two key cards that are attainable. I mentioned a '52 Mantle and she essentially offered me a buy out. She said I could purchase a copy of the card if I agreed to not spend so much per year on cards. Had I been then where I am now in my collection I might've taken her up on the offer. Great card!

    Question is:

Who lives in the house with you the longest, Anson or Mickey? image

    << <i>Question is:

Given the shipping difficulties of USPS, I am happy to say that our son has been with us longer than the Mickey (just barely), so he has easy seniority.

Only asking the question because I don't know the answer...

The OP stated one of the reasons the negotiations took awhile was because of reholdering... The scan clearly has an old flip! Does PSA reholder old-flip cards with the same flip or a new flip in old style???

The card was reholdered this morning as a walk-thru (with the help of my father-in-law who lives right near Santa Ana) with the gracious assistance and oversight of Joe O.

You are correct, the scan is the older flip. And, to be clear, the finalizing of the transaction was contingent on this thing reholdering without incident, which it did this morning.

Edited to add: I don't know how differently the new holder/flip will look from scan since this is my first direct submission to PSA in several years.

Dan - congratulations on the purchase of the card. it looks great. If I can ask, why did you want it re-holdered (just curious)?

When I initially received the card, it was pretty clear that the card holder had not been breached in any way. However, the top left corner had come slightly loose, which isn't terribly uncommon as I've seen this happen to other holdered cards. For obvious reasons on this card, however, I knew it would drive me nuts if I did not address it. Also, if I ever choose to sell it down the road, I didn't want this to be a concern for anybody else.

So, I quickly arranged with PSA to have it looked at and reholdered as quickly as possible just to be extra safe, and the seller was supportive of that. Fortunately, it worked out just great. PSA was a huge help for stepping in and helping in such quick fashion.

Peace of mind is a wonderful thing.

If it's appropriate, I would really like to understand the steps necessary to obtain your beautiful Mantle.
    Congratulations again!

    Thunderdan,

Well done! That's a card that has so far eluded my grasp. I've wanted one for awhile, went so far as to put one on layaway, decided that I'd rather do signed rookies and took advantage of the terms the seller had offered to apply my layaway $$ to unsigned cards I still needed for my rookie collection. I hope to get one eventually one day. Yours is a fine example of one of the most famous cards in the hobby.

    Congratulations!!
