If it is burnished I for one would not want to buy one. I don't care if the mint did it or a coin doctor did it, it's all the same to me. image

    Why "Huh?"

It all goes back to this foolishness where there were these burnished Goodacre Sackie dollars. The only real ones were the piece in holders. Coin doctors were producing raw ones and selling them to people who didn't know any better. The same concept applies here. It's easy to duplicate the surface of a burnished coin. Producing a homemade brilliant to satin finish Proof is another matter. Struck surfaces are cool. image ; post strike manufactured surfaces are junk so far I'm concerned. image

The burnished ones have a "W" mint mark. How can someone make a burnished one without having it detectable by the lack of a mint mark or added mint mark? Am I missing something?

In my mind, it has nothing to do with the Sackie business (whatever that was).

These are the W-mint SAEs marketed to collectors, sold directly by the Mint to the collector (as opposed to the Bullion version). To my knowledge, it has not been worthwhile to burnish them and add a "W" in the aftermarket. image

The planchets are burnished prior to being struck, as I understand it.

It just seems like a lot of misplaced hostility toward a pretty benign $25 or so coin. image

You are using wrong search terms...........

Many don't use 'Burnished' in title but any non proof/non buffalo/non spouse 2008-w gold is burnished.

Most are Buy it Now and few are true auctions.

Did I mention few listings between Christmas/New Years??

Tyr searching............. 2008-w gold -proof -buffalo -spouse

BillJones, that story has been debunked. Pre-strike burnishing was only one step in the process of the Goodacre coins' manufacture, and the special finish is unique. It cannot be duplicated post-Mint. In this particular case, you really don't know what you're talking about.

I don't know if the "W" Burnished American Gold Eagles are pre or post strike burnished, but as RYK points out, the mintmark might be difficult to add onto the coin. The burnished finish looks fine, imo.

How many do you need? image

    RYK - um, you know - I really hadn't considered how many I need!!image

Try searching "2008-w gold -proof -buffalo -spouse"

This eliminates the proofs, buffs and spouses.............
