POST A SCAN OF YOUR FAVORITE CARD WHEN YOU WERE A KID

I remember doing a paper on Payton's life and I pasted this card on the cover of the report, lol.

Here's the card that got me started. Pete is from my hometown; I delivered papers to his parents.

  • For my first Braves/Astros game (went for 3 game series every summer for about 10 years), my dad made neverending trips to the store to get me a few packs of 79 Topps hoping I would pull one card of my favorite player to get auto'd at the game. Probably took him 5 trips before I finally got one:

This one right here (minus the autograph, of course). I just got this one this week and I've been looking for it signed for about 3 years.

I liked this card because it was probably the first card I ever owned besides a 58 Billy Martin. He also reminded me of some of our relatives the type you wouldnt want to piss off back in the 50s.

1979 Topps football was the first set I ever bought packs from. I never pulled this one from a pack but had to make my first major trade to get it from my best friend. I believe it cost me a Franco Harris and Steelers superbowl card.

    me too....

I had bought cards prior to this, but the 1979's were the first that I heavily collected...and this Staubach was THE card that I had to have. This card is the card that I think of when I recall my childhood collection.

Nothing fancy, but it was my favorite! I keep a raw one in my collection to this day (never have gotten around to buying a PSA 10 though... one day I'm sure).

The one below and the Jim Rice RC from the set.

Being a 9 year old in Boston at the time I started collecting I spent my allowance every week at the local store until I had these 2 cards.

Glad to see someone else has an appreciation for that set.

another favorite of mine was the Ryne Sandberg from that set. He's being chased by a rhino.

In 1953, my best friend at the time, Tony Marconi, traded this card to me for a '52 Topps Duke Snider. We were opening our packs of '52 Topps, mainly for the gum inside.

This is the actual card. Tony passed away in 1990, but I will always cherish the memories we shared growing up together.

  • I remember the day I opened the pack that had my favorite card in it (this one). I was walking through a field (short cut) on my way home from school after buying a few '74 packs at the drug store. I still remember how excited I was because I remember it was a really tough card to get and I finally GOT IT! Such excitement that year when Hank broke the HR record.

I kinda got the chills. I can't imagine opening '52 Topps packs back in the day, much less trading for a card that I'd keep in PSA 7 condition after all of those years. Wow. Super cool

Not the same card, though I think I might still have it somewhere, this was the first "expensive" card I bought at a card show as a kid in the early 80's. I remember paying $6 for it, and my mom thought I was crazy.

    Poppa,

I guess there are really two reasons I like ya:

    1. We are probably the two biggest MICK fans on the boards.
    2. You and Tony (fiveniner) are the only two that show cards older than the one I show! LMAO!

    MERRY CHRISTMAS!

  • I loved breakfast cereal - but after finding out they put FREE cards in the box - I ate a whole lot more.

This 1971 set - and in particular - this card ROBERTO CLEMENTE card was one of my favorites. For me, Clemente always looked majestic in all his poses.

    Hi Doug,

I can't speak for Tony (fiveniner), but I only have OLD cards because I'm OLD!

I AM fortunate to have been born in a time when kids collected their favorite players and didn't have to spend a fortune doing it.

As always, thank you for the kind words and Merry Christmas to you and your family!

Poppa & Tony ... I can relate to that ... started opening packs in '65 (when I was in 2nd grade) ... all I wanted was Yankees, especially THE MICK! Would go down to the local deli with my quarter allowance and buy 5 packs of cards. Walked out of the deli and would start flipping with the other kids outside. Now here on Long Island most of us did not actually "flip" the cards for heads and tails. We would play like you did a game of "WAR" with a regular deck of cards. You would win when you matched the other guys color (Usually the color of the team name.)

For those of you that played this way, do you remember "Larrys", "Picks no Owes" and "Shades"?????????

i can remember buying cards with my friends. i got the cards, they got the gum.

    Thanks,

I have to share two scans since I collected as a kid then started again later on.

These are from the "kid" collecting -

Then around 1980 I traded a 63 Mantle beater for this and got started all over again:

Poppa, I love the story of your Mantle. Somehow the memory of the trade and your friend undoubtedly eclipses what has turned out to be a very valuable card. Thanks very much for sharing!

I never really had a particular favorite as a kid. I didn't really start collecting until 1982 but this one was a favorite before that:

    (not mine):

    image

I really dug the red batting helmet, LOL.

Other favorite would be one of the 1976 Topps All-Time All-Stars or 1979 Topps All-Time Leaders. Bought those as a kid - and still have them somewhere. I was fascinated by stats and old-time greats.
