Tell your "friend" it looks fake to my eyes. But, yes, it is dated 1872.

At first glance it screamed "TOKEN' . After some research of Heritage archives I'm convinced it is a brass token.

My friend payed $10.00 for it thinking she got a deal on real gold., image

  • I would say it's a token, NOT gold. It needs to have the word DOL., DOLL., or DOLLAR to be a genuine Cal. Fractional

  • I know nothing about gold or tokens, but judging by that thing's condition and luster, I would say
it was made very recently. Maybe it's a copy of a token. Do you have a link to the auction?
  • I'm sorry to say this, but I think your friend paid about $10.00 too much.

Just my very shiny 2 cents worth.

Try sending your pics to Mike Locke (calgoldcoin.com). His email addy: lockem@calgoldcoin.com
I'm fairly certain this is a modern souvenir token. Not gold.

If real it would be the one listed on page 378 of the 2009 "RED BOOK".
But as mentioned many tokens and flat out fakes were made in these patterns.

Does anyone know when these were made? Were they souvenir pieces you could buy at tourist shops in the 1960's?
