The "I was pleasantly surprised when...." thread

I was pleasantly surprised earlier this week, when my auction purchases from Heritage were shipped to me a day earlier than expected.

Who's next?

I was pleasantly surprised when I received the coin pictured below with an invoice for LESS THAN the price posted on the dealer's web site...and it was intentionally lowered by the dealer because he had room in the coin, not because I asked for a lower price

Nice retained Cud Barndog, and your NewP's coinguy1.

    Outstanding Barndog.

I was pleasantly surprised at the overall quality of this forum and its members.
And how it revived my interest. Wasn't expecting it.

I found out the first flight of the 787 is scheduled for Tuesday, 12/15, right across the street from my office.

Oh, you meant coin related. I've been pleasantly surprised with the speed recent eBay purchase have reached me, even those coming from across the country.

when I found out the $25 price on the holder of the nice original VF 1909S dime at a show not only wasn't a typo, but the dealer also said 'the price isn't firm, make me an offer' when he took it out of the case image

When I got the invoice from Stack's Mail/Fax/Internet auction and noticed I won EVERY lot I tossed a bid on.

  • When I went to the mailbox today. I received an unexpected package containing two coins from a friend. Totally unexpected, and a very thoughtful gift.

I needed one more coin to submit to NGC (didn't want to waste a freebie), so I walked to the nearest
table, looked through a binder of raw coins and spotted a gorgeously toned Buffalo 5c in a 2x2 marked
"38-D Choice BU $40". Came back from NGC MS66 38-D/S! I stupidly took over $200 in trade for it on
a coin I ended up not liking as well as the Buffalo, and which I later sold at a loss. Easy come, easy go.

I purchased this coin raw and graded it an AU55-8. It came back PCGS MS62.

Cheer up Steve. There was no requirement that the pleasant surprise be this week. Think back a little further.image

Ok I was pleasantly surprised the night my aunt gave me a stack of Morgan dollars that my grandfather had left

his kids and included in the lot was an 1893 CC Morgan in F12 that PCGS slabbed.

My Grandfather had no idea (or so I thought) about how to collect. Yet in his hoard he had almost all different dates.

I don't think he knew about MM.

    Good for you.

It snowed real hard Wednesday and I got to stay home and play with my kids instead of going to work.

    But that's OT ...

I was pleasantly surprised when ... I realized I generally don't miss the coins I sell, no matter how much I think I'm going to.

...I reined this one in last night. I expect it would have exceeded the BIN by about 2X if it had run it's course as an auction. image Julian AM-61. 53 mm. AE.

I bought a coin on the BST,
    a bullion coin, not graded,
    but before it was shipped,
    he noticed it was spotted,
so he delayed sending it in order to get another one
for what seemed to me to be a long time
    however
    when it arrived
he sent an MS70 NGC instead.

    that's good customer service!!

I was more than surprised when an honorable forum dealer bought an early type coin of mine, told me he thought I let it go too cheaply for the market at that time, then sent me an additional check when he resold the coin. Makes you want to keep looking, in case there might be another guy like that out there somewhere? image
