After exactly eleven months, it has FINALLY happened.....

LongacreLongacre Posts: 16,717 ✭✭✭
As I write these words, I have just arrived back at my desk with my lunch, because The Man does not even allow us to take time to eat a meal in the cafeteria. I am enjoying my turkey with pepper jack cheese, lettuce, tomato, onions, and jalepenos on a whole wheat wrap. I dutifully paid the amount due, and received 54 cents in change.

Upon looking at my change, I noticed a bright and shiny cent. My heart beat faster as I took a closer look to see if after eleven long months, IT had finally happened.

I am happy to report that I received one of the new 2009 Lincoln cents in change! It is the one where Lincoln is pointing at the IL capitol building(?).

I would net grade the coin as a 62 due to the excessive numbers of spots on the obverse, which can be seen without the aid of a glass. The reverse, however, is choice uncirculated with full mint luster. A tiny rim nick appears just above the "F" in "OF", and can be used as a pedigree identifier, but does not detract.

Has anyone else gone 11 months without getting one of these seemingly excessively rare coins in circulation?

I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

Are you trying to get some info to flip it through BST or eBay? image

I haven't found any of the new coins so far, but my wife found 2 log cabin cents.

For a second there I thought you had found one of those incredibly rare Lincoln cents where an image of President Kennedy is staring up at President Lincoln.

WOW! what a lucky find! This ranks right up there with finding a gem roll of $4 Stellas (coiled hair) in an old dresser I got @ a garage, er--estate sale.

For what it's worth, in circulation I've gotten the first three plain Lincolns, a roll of D log cabins at face (from a bank at the SLC airport), DC P+D and Guam P quarters. No nickels or dimes, though.

But I'm happiest about getting the Oklahoma D quarter today that I needed to finish my circ set of P+D State Quarters image

Of course that took about 900 + cash transactions without using exact change image

    Longacre -

It is clear what you must do. Get it slabbed, pedigreed as a "Longacre Discovery Specimen," and put it in Airplanenut's next charity auction. I can't think of any better way to put a stop to this silliness.

  • I received, or obtained from a take a penny box, my first new Lincoln cent about a week ago. It was the one of him sitting on a log or something like that. It was only the 3rd one I had seen. A friend had shown me 2 they had received in change. So here it is December 2nd and I have actually seen 3 of the new cents.

As I write these words, I am eating the exact same sandwich as in my OP (yes, I know, your very own Longacre is somewhat boring). However, I am happy to report that I am now 50% complete on my 2009 circulating Lincoln cent collection! I received the "Lincoln sitting on a log" version in change at the cafeteria.

The obverse is well struck, as expected, with a fair number of black specks on the lower portion of the coin, none of which are especially distracting. A tiny pin scratch hails at 2 o'clock. The reverse contains a number of small circulation marks, which are a testament to the originality of this coin and the fact that it was used in circulation. Full mint bloom remains, and the coin is a pleasing orange red color.

Perhaps if I go to the cafeteria tomorrow and Thursday and order the same sandwich, I will end up with the rest of the collection. image

Whew, that was a relief. I thought you were going to say Mrs L gave birth when I read the thread title. Bless you for keeping it coin related and thank God for Abraham Lincoln's examples/ er image specimens.

Congrats. I was away last week and didn't have my laptop with me. I missed announcement of this important event.

Honestly, I thought you were going to say The Man fired you, or you moved to greener pastures...

Longacre would have been in a frothy frenzy this evening in MrsRYK's kitchen. She dumped some pennies on the granite to illustrate a math point to my daughter, and there were no fewer than six, SIX, 2009 Lincoln cents, of three different designs.
  • Nothing dated 2009 for me yet - good find!
Have bought and sold on BST, many references available when asked.
