I already know the coin so I'll exclude myself. Nice image, but it doesn't do the luster justice.

I'm going to guess MS66 - it is quite attractive and appears to be cleaner than the large majority of MS65's I have seen.

If that mark on her arm is as minted... 66. Otherwise 64.

Regardless of the assigned grade, that mark on the arm, even assuming it was man made, should not make for a two point difference in grade.

Edited to add: Besides the mark on the arm, what causes you to deduct 6 points from a 70 on the coin?

SmallEagle: Whatever the assigned grade, she's a beauty!! image

I'll guess the grade at MS-65, limited to that mainly because of the slightly weak strike on the top half of the obverse corresponding to the lower half of the reverse, which affects the upper obv stars as well as Miss Liberty's head & hair detail, and the "One Dollar" denomination on the reverse.

I presume that she may be a shot MS-66 coin. The TPGS's don't seem to give as much consideration to strength of strike, mint luster, and original surfaces, as they do to either presence or lack of contact marks.

Beautiful coin, and looks to be a solid 66. The mark draws too much attention to itself for 67, IMO.

If I cover up the mark on the arm, that would bea 67-68 based on the apparent luster, the crisp early strike (except for upper obverse, which I'll assume is the norm and forgive), and the fact that the rest of the coin is essentially flawless. Eye appeal is fantastic, so even though the mark puts it in the 66-67 range, eye appeal puts it over the edge and it's a 67.

So you can't see the images but you're guessing MS66 based on the replies?image If so, such a technique will certainly work better for at least some posters than guessing, based on images.image

    Mark,

I question it being post mint because it looks like either a proof or a proof-like coin to me. I'd expect to see a break in the frost if it was PMD.

It is an exceptional coin however.. I am not good at grading MS Seated Dollars however image

If that's not post mint on the arm.. and the scratches and lines are on the holder.

    A 67 wouldn't shock me.

Thanks for the explanation. And for what it's worth, other than being too tough on the coin in the event that the mark on the arm occurred after it was struck, I think you're doing just fine.image

Here's a photo in the slab I took this afternoon:

    image

It is one of two MS67s for the type (with motto seated dollar). There are also two MS67s in the without motto type. I felt fortunate to add this to my collection since Trade Dollar Nut seems to have most of the nice seated dollars esconced in his collection. image I asked for his advice when I considered buying this and he was very generous with his knowledge about the coin.

The other MS67 with motto seated dollar is in TDN's collection and has a better and more even strike. This one has luster coming out the wazoo.... (which doesn't really get captured in these photos)

From the angle in the latest picture I don't really see the hit on the arm, so I give it a MS69. I'd give it a 70 if it weren't tarnished. image

Every coin is net graded. This is a perfect example. You take off for the strike, you take off for the ticks, you take off for the slide marks on Liberty's arm. But the luster and eye appeal demand a very high starting point.

Well it was kinda glaring to me in those pics, but now that I see it in the holder and see what I think the luster looks like...

    I will go with:

"I felt the reverse was spectacular and the obverse so-so... a bit weakly struck and ticky?" image

I also feel, based on what I've heard about this coin, that the pictures that my monitor are displaying are lacking some luster that is definately there. I will also not say my grade, I too already know. image

Also, keep in mind that this date very rarely comes well struck from what I've seen, with the exception of TDN's coin. Even though TDN's is HAMMERED, stars 8 and 9 seem to show a little weakness. My example has just a little better strike than the OP's coin and we considered it fairly well struck for the date.

    Small Eagle,

I give you credit for not being at all defensive about the grade guesses for your coin. It can be excruciatingly painful to post or see a nice coin posted, then watch and cringe at how the grade guesses compare to the assigned grade. You set a great example with the attitude and conduct you displayed in this thread.

I actually think the grade guesses would have been even lower if TDN hadn't chimed in in the 2nd post saying he knew the coin and the photos under-displayed the luster. I figured the average guess would be 64. In person it's another story though... image

Nice to finally see this one, nice coin SmallEagle! I'd love to see it in hand. This date is much tougher than pops show because it's first year of issue with the motto. We finally found an MS-63 that we are happy with.
