Very Sad....

How the mint/government couldn't have somehow put aside even 250,000 blanks for the proof silver eagle. Now because of their stupidity collectors will always have a hole/gap in their set image

  • It could be worse, you could collect SBA's.

Is there a hole in your set because you have no 1931 or 1933 quarters? It is nothing more than something we will get used to in the future. What will always have a hole in it is the Dansco albums that were expecting a W and PR to be released this year.

    Yeah! Blame Dansco!

If the U.S. Mint does not mint a particular coin for a particular year is there really a hole/gap...I've never heard Morgan, Buffalo nickel etc. collectors
worrying about such a hole/gap...why would this be a concern to ASE collectors?

I think that in the modern era, there is the expectation that things will continue as they always have...and in this case, it means annual proof SAEs for the rest of our natural lives. Personally, I am not losing any sleep over it.

I found it interesting that, just like Congress wanting to get involved by legislating for a NCAA football playofff system, a couple of Congressmen apparently wanted to put pressure on the Mint to make proof SAEs (as if there were not more pressing legislative matters). I don't care what they do with the coins, but the last thing we need is the government screwing up college football. image

Well... looks like nobody see's it the way I do :/ I just think it's bull that they did this to the most popular series. They could have set aside a smaller number of blanks and limited the sales to one per customer. I think doing this would have been a boost for the series and the mint.

To me, gaps in production coinage is not the same as a collector series gap.

You mean like in proof sets? Sure, there was some fuss at the time, but it seems to me people got over it without too much grief. I'd imagine this will turn out about the same.

It's only a problem if you let it be one.

I bet you will be able to get the missing ones from China shortly. Those mint boxes and papers have to go somewhere.

Maybe all the gold dealers got tick off because we all bought from the US Mint and they did not sell much gold. Now we need to buy from them to fill holes. image

    I agree with Coll3ctor.

The proofs are made with the expectation that they will be minted yearly...
they are in fact made to be collected and people collect them marking each year.

this to me sets these apart from normal coinage gaps.

Poor planning by the Mint on this one, they dropped the ball.

    Loves me some shiny!
  • I sold mine shortly after hearing the news they would skip a year.... I kept the reverse proof but the
    others found another home..

I have a few rolls left for investment but the premium Eagles were sold including the burnished.

Fear not, I'm sure someone (SilverTowne?) will come up with a 'round' that can fill that hole in the Dansco. image

That would be sad even without the 17 year gap.

  • Am I disappointed, sure, but I'll get over it. What really kind of gets me is the whole fill the public demand thing. Isn't there a public demand for proof and "W" mint marked ASE's? Don't the premiums the Mint charges for these collectibles exceed what make selling bullion coins to distributors? Seems to me the Mint could be helping to improve the financial standing of the country slightly more than by lining the pockets of the distributors that might be selling in part to foreign investors (part of the public demand?). Is this same government wisdom that might be running our health care system soon? Scary.

They made up for it by making only cents in 1816. If they make only proof SAEs in 2010, all sins will be forgiven. image
