I like it as a 45, assuming it is in PCGS plastic. I think the wear is probably closer to an XF40 but it will get the bump to the next grade for eye appeal.

I'd bump the grade to XF45/AU50 if there were luster on the coin. The blue iridescence on the obv could be covering luster but that's not always the case. It seems that we discussed a similar O mint coin here a year or two ago that seemed VF/XF at first but actually slabbed out as AU50/53......same coin?
I owned a full struck NGC MS65 of this date (small o variety) back in the later 1980's. It had proof like characteristics and I traced it all the way back to Steve Ivy's retail catalog of 1976. Still one of the finest known and probably MS66 or better today. It was an amazing toned gem small o.

<< <i>One thing to keep in mind is the O mints from this time often come wth weak and uneven strikes. >>
And that is, folks, the key to the riddle that seateddime has posed for us.
My guess is that this coin is correctly graded at AU-50 or even 53, but it is a 45 at the very most conservative least!

I'm with Stone on this one -
its a beautiful coin and would
easily grade a minimum [IMHO ]
of AU 50. But I wouldn't be surprised
to see it in a 55 holder.

I just can't bring myself to put it in the AU range but it probably is there already.

XF45 is a fair grade. It does appear quite flattish on the obverse with actually stronger reverse details. These usually don't come with the reverse stronger than the obverse. The 1853-0 is notorious for a flattish obverse strike but not so much the 1850-0. On the half dozen or so uncs I can recall seeing over the years, I don't really recall any having real strike issues in the central obverse...not like the 42-0, 49-0, and 53-0.

<< <i>The coin was originally BB'd but now it is in a XF45 holder. Know this date I grade the coin an AU and bought it raw as an AU. Maybe I will resubmit it someday but the seller has trueview photos of the coin that are better than mine. >>
BB'd for AT or environmental damage?
