JCMHouston, Goldbully & Zap1111: Thanks very much for your complimentary posts on this thread regarding my new 1831 Capped Bust Half Dollar purchased this week from Dick Osburn at the Houston SW Money Coin Show.

Not only does Dick have nice coins, but he and everyone that works with him are enjoyable to visit with and with whom to do business. He is a most knowledgeable Collector's Dealer and is very personable. image

    Nice 1831 Stuart, congrats!!

I have bought several busties from Dick in the past and he is a class act. I only wish I could meet him and thank him personally. Who knows, perhaps one day I'll get to a show he's at.

Nice coins, the only problem with Dick is the prices. But quality coins aren't cheap, so you have to pay up but it is normally well worth it.
If I say something in the woods, and my wife isn't around. Am I still wrong?
  • IMHO when it comes to bust & seated material in collector grades it is Dick Osburn and then there is everybody else. Although I have heard good things about Rich Uhrich but have not dealt with him.

GoldBully: That's a pretty 1833 CBH that you posted. Dick has a great high eye-appealing inventory of classic coins that are a pleasure to examine in person. image

I'll take ugly shots of em when I get em...

    nice CBH - Stuart..

That is a great looking CBH. Congrats on the purchase.

Here is a coin that I got at one of the TNA shows in Ft. Worth from Mr. Osburn.

Marauderrt10: Thanks for your post. In reply to your above quoted question, the thread subject 1831 Capped Bust Half Dollar (O-102) is graded NGC AU-58 image

I cannot detect any luster breaks in the unprotected portions of the coin fields on either the obverse or reverse. Just very light rub on the highest points of Miss Liberty's Breast and the Hair curl over her ear on the obverse and the top of the Eagle's Head and upper wing tips with light rub also on the outer portion of the Eagle's right (viewer's left) wing.

I consider this to be a true "Slider" by strict definition with minimal cabinet friction, and that was also Dick Osburn's opinion.

Being personally very partial to seated material in collector grades, I always, and I mean always, stop by his table whenever I see him at a show, and he is as nice a guy as everyone else in the thread says. I just wish I could afford the better stuff...

Stuart, based on this image, I'd agree; this is what an AU 58 should look like. Some coins like this in this series wind up in MS 62 holders.
    "Vou invadir o Nordeste,
    "Seu cabra da peste,
    "Sou Mangueira......."
  • I too always take a quick look at Dick's coins, but I don't spend too much time looking (as they don't keep a roll of paper towels on hand to wipe up my drool). His inventory is unbelievable. The last time I saw him at a show he was nice enough to take a blast white 1796 dime graded MS-62 out of the case for me, knowing that there was not the slightest chance that it was anything I could afford to purchase. I highly recommend stopping at his table if you ever see him at a show. Most dealers with an inventory half as nice as his are quite snobby, but he's very friendly and nice to talk to. I can say without a doubt that he has the largest (and nicest) selection of seated coins that I have ever seen in one spot.image
