How can you tell if an account has been compromised?

lkeneficlkenefic Posts: 8,609 ✭✭✭✭✭
I had an erroneous charge show up on the credit card linked to my ebay account. It was $80+ to the USPS. How can I tell if this is my credit card or my ebay account... or if it was just a mistake?

Thanks

Leo

USPS charges don't come thru ebay. Someone is using your charge number. --Jerry

When I purchase postage through the USPS website it requires my CC that gets charged
    the postage.
When I sell on ebay and print shipping label from there it is not charged to my CC but
is a charge to my Paypal account and shows up there.

What Jerry said, beat me to it!

My wife called the cc company earlier today to question the USPS charge. I just got off the phone and the card has been canceled. Apparently there were other charges as well... 'tis the season...

FYI... the first erroneous charge was a $1 charge to buy online music... apparently cc thieves typically do this to check and see if the account is valid.

  • I've made charges before and not recognized them, still better to check.

The CC company can't just drop the charges. You need to have whoever did the charging issue the credit.

Uh, yes they can.. They will get a statement from you that the charge was not authorized and do a
charge back against the company that posted the charge in the first place..

    It's called a dispute....

Well, I was just thinking that you'd need more than a phone call to get it done. I had a phantom membership to a sex related website charged to mine. There was a phone number associated with it. I called and they cancelled the membership and refunded the money. Otherwise I would have had to go the tedious route. I initially asked the CC company to drop/reverse the charges and they said that they could not do it.
