Would you recommend buying $100 plat. eagle at melt

what do you think of the idea of buying a $100 Slabbed Plat. Eagle in PCGS plastic at current melt levels?

    Sounds like a cheap way to play the platinum market -- a market I like -- so I say yes.

    Just make sure you have the latest melt figure, been dropping today.

    If you're inclined to be buying platinum anyway, it's a good deal. Just out of curiosity, what is the date? If it is being sold at melt, that tells me that another "melt" of Plats is underway.

    Yea, I'd give that purchase a crack. I would not pay any numismatic premium for the U.S. platinum coins, however. When I was dealer I couldn't sell platinum coins to anyone except the dealers who bought them at melt.
    Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

    MS69s often sell for slightly less than fresh coins. When I grade coins I figure that the 69s I get back are worth melt. So there is nothing new here. --Jerry
