Grade opinions on flowing hair dollar

I would appreciate it if I can get some grade opinions and ballpark value of this flowing hair dollar. I have some bust dollars as well but I figure I would start with this one.

But that's based on "general grading principles." I know less than nothing about grading this series, strike characteristics for the date, etc.

VF details, rim bumps, very old cleaning.

The sharpness grade is VF-20, but it has been cleaned to a light polish and now retoned, PLUS it has rim damage. I'd net grade it VG-10. It would get a "genuine" holder from PCGS and similar opinion from NGC.

VF details, cleaned/corroded and rim bruises. Net F 12.

I'd say it is worth somewhere in the neighborhood of $3,500 to $4,000.

Is that thing real? Something doesn't look right about it.

Here is a genuine example of the variety ... You can compare them.

Yes the piece might be bogus, but it could also be problems with the photo.

There is a significant difference in looks to this one versus the OP example. The percentage of realestate consumed by the rim and dentils on the OP are very high when compared to this one. Also, the wreath, eagle and letters/numbers looks somewhat different to me.

My photo skills are really lacking. This was the best I could do. Are there different varieties of this date.

Your coin and the piece I posted in my picture are die variety Bolender 5, which is the most common die variety for the year and among the Flowing Hair dollars. The bar (die scratch) behind Ms. Liberty's head is the give away for the variety. I thought that the date on your coin looked a bit large, but now that I compare the two, I think you coin is OK, subject to a personal examination.

That was my first reaction as well, though I don't know squat about early dollars, this to me has kind of a 'cast' look to it - but maybe it's the old cleaning and pics that give that impression. Otherwise the detail is decent and the rim marks not overly distracting to me.

My guess - and that's all it is, based on a quick look at the images - is that the coin is a genuine, VF25 details, rather harshly cleaned example with rim problems.

I too thought your dollar has that 'cast' look to it.

She's a B-5 VF 20-25 cleaned. The rim hits will factor as well.
  • jdillanejdillane Posts: 2,365 ✭✭✭
I had a B-5 back in 2005. Bought her raw - I thought she was a high VF. PCGS gave her a 25. Granted, I may have been influenced by "owner optimism".

That said, mine had more meat than the op's. Original surfaces, nice rims and some reverse adjustment marks. Sold her on the bay in 2007. Miss her.
