<< <i>The Mint can KMA on this one, I don't want it even as a gift. It's an insult to the majority of us here. >>
I dont think I'll get one or two I'll hold out. Did you say KYA.
Hoard the keys.
consider.
a person who makes 45000 a year should probably not be collecting
these....
if they want platinum buy it at spot plus a reasonable premium.
eventually this mint bubble of products will pop...
I had pretty much convinced myself that I was going to buy this coin. Why? Because ...
(1) I like the idea of the 6-year series. I think it has promise, and I like the design.
(2) I want to keep my PAE set going.
(3) I can afford it, though I don't really want to spend that kind of money on a single coin.
But over the last few days, I think I've talked myself out of it:
(1) Most observers would agree we're in a precious metals bubble at the moment and it's probably not the best time to buy gold nor platinum. Especially with the kind of markup the Mint has on the item.
(2) I don't like the design more than I like past designs, like the Vistas of Liberty series for the first 7 (I think?) years of the program. I'd like to go back and buy those and I would rather have those than have a single coin.
(3) Similarly, I don't want that coin for $1700 more - quite less, actually - than I want some other coins or sets, so the money would likely be "better" spent elsewhere.
(4) Though I like the design, it's not as good as many of the other proposed designs were for this concept (story of the Mint lately ...). I searched, trying to remind myself what they were, but I couldn't find them.
Now, if the Mint had continued to release these as 1/10 oz coins, too, I'd be all over it. But right now, me plopping down nearly $2k on a single coin is, well, kinda silly when I could spend that money elsewhere on things that I would much rather have (and are not necessarily coins).
Actively Collecting: Yearly Mint Stuff, Ikes, SBAs
Passively Collecting: All coins currently circulating
Type Set: (20th-21st century) First year of issue (or 1901), P Mint, ALL varieties
It will IMO take a very low..................likely sub 2,500 mintage to negate the unpopular design.
I don't think there are much over 2,000-2,500 hard core platinum collectors who have to have one.
Many of the rest of us may sit this one out................

To the contrary, gold used to be too expensive to collect, now there is a good collector base and lots of relatively poor collectors get their gold type coins. Platinum will eventually do the same thing as our standard of living keeps raising(unless the dollar collapses and PT goes to $10k/ounce). When platinum becomes affordable, the low pops are going to be huge. Especially some of the ones that got melted in the S. Africa electrical shortage price runup of 2007.

Gritsman, if I get enough interest in doing so, I'll be glad to chop up some of these into 1/10ths, 1/4ths, and 1/2 oz. pieces and sell them accordingly - to collectors who are more interested in keeping their fractional Plat Series collections intact. Just specify which head you are most interested in.
I knew it would happen.
<< <i>Not in--with relief! Fortunately, I collect the smaller denominations, so have little incentive to wade into this expensive pond. BTW, the design is not the worst I've ever seen, but is so uninspired compared to what they could have done. They should leave these designs to the artists, not the politicians!

Twist of fate... Once new "king" is annointed mint will revise their mintage report. Sorry, we forgot about the other 10000 in the vault! Pump and dump!

<< <i>Who are you guys kidding??? You'll all jump on this in the end...ugly design or not. Mintage will be low because the cost is prohibitive, and numbers are "king" around here.

Dream on. Everyone will watch sales of this coin and if it's a low mintage expect a sell out as people jump aboard. It's a long way to the 2010 plats and this will be on sale for quite awhile.

Him speaketh truth.
With no fractionals and people screaming for product I doubt they struck less than 4,000.
Even if initial sales are slow the weekly numbers will lure buyers in if sales/mintages look initally to be sub 2,000-2,5000.
Remember what created the rarities of 2008 was the whipsaw of spot pricing, confusing sales vs. mintage numbers, general economic conditions, lots of returns and multitude of offerings............
Now consider...............
11 different 2008-W buffalo choices
10 different 2008-w APE choices
11 different 2008-w AGE choices
This year outside of bullion offerings you have..............
1 different 2009-W APE choice
1 different 2009-W buffalo choice
0 different 2009-W AGE choice
We have already seen that they struck plenty of 2009-W Buffalo proofs
IMO the 2009-W APE proof will not be a sub 4,000 sales/mintage coin.
I think the scarce date on the obverse will trump whatever happens to be on the reverse.

No other options for Platinum Eagles means more buyers will come to this offering. That doesn't guarantee a low mintage, in fact it works against a low mintage.
If I sniff any chance of this being over 5,500 or so, I am not touching it.
The fractionals and the low mintage "W" Burnished Plats will continue to be the main story unless this one comes in under 4,500 and that is questionable and unlikely, in my view.
I knew it would happen.

site was a bit slow for a couple of minutes. timed me out of one page (and only one page).
everything resumed its normal pace within 5 minutes.
it says something that the mint released the plat proof and the first spouses on the same day.
obviously they were not expecting another lincoln coin & chronicles saga.
(Just think of city streets clogged with a hundred thousand horses each generating 15 lbs of manure every day...)
<< <i>A century ago collectors thought the same of matte & Roman finish gold proofs, now look what they sell for! >>
That's not very reassuring ... It's doubtful that any of us will be around 100 years from now ...
you can pick up older prf70's, pcgs for that price

<< <i>OK, lazy question, but will the price float on the spot of platinum like the First Hags gold, or what? >>
I think the increments are $100 for plats and $50 for gold.

I knew it would happen.

<< <i>None from me.....I am still waiting.

Cancelled my order.
I figured I can wait
I can also take a chance with a price decline since there appears to be some wiggle room that would cushion against any feared price increase.
we'll see thursday.

Quite possibly the correct move!
I have yet to dive into the Plat Proof water so I will see how tepid or frigid it becomes over this weeks time, too!

Not to fan any hysteria but I checked my 09 Plat Proof order and it has a delivery date of 12/22/2009. The US Mint Website shows 12/23/2009 as the delivery date for ordering coins.
<< <i>That presents a dilemma for those who cancelled their orders expecting to reorder at a lower price tier. There might not be another chance.
yeah, thanks for the update.
plat is going to have to plunge hard wednesday (to maybe 1375?) to average under $1450 this past week.
I think I'll re-place the order tonight.
335548xx...... trying to close the deal quick? it went from expect 12/17 to 12/20 to 12/21 to 12/22. this morning said 12/23, then ISnR with an account hit in 2 hours. i don't think they will be around for next week's repricing, unless returns/cancellations occur in numbers.
