Somehow, I don't think all of the bidders for that auction know what "empty" means.

Judging by the questions asked about the auction.... most seemed aware it was just the box. Even asked the seller to post a buy it now price, etc.

Looks like were are entering an era where the empty Mint packaging is now going to see price rises. Same thing with the gold Eagle proofs.... if you don't have the original box, COA, etc.... you are not going to get that top dollar.

Lots of coins have been slabbed and boxes thrown away, and some like this buffalo there just are not that many around. Interesting.....

Seemed to draw a lot of questions and bids image
  • wow! that makes up for the premium that you pay the mint for the coin!

  • I made a point of always either asking for the box or buying one to replace the one I was missing. I read guys bashing the packaging on these modern coins because it raises the price but regardless of how the box impacts the original purchase price it is still part of the initial package. Any collectable will be worth more with the original packaging be it the Barbie box or the mint packaging. These guys buying the boxes arn't crazy they are simply seperating the coin they bought from the many slabbed coins out there. I predict the 4 coin boxes are next as folks try to push graded 4 coin sets even higher with original packaging. With the money these coins are fetching anything that makes you feel like you got a better deal is a powerful marketing aid.

I want the stupid 1st spouse (Jefferson actually) boxes to start going up in value...I still have a half-dozen of those image
(no coins anymore though, a certain forum member bought me and my friends out of them and wouldn't take the damn boxes image )

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

  • The 1/4 oz proof buffalo box should bring top dollar then since there are only 1331 of those around. Now all we have to do is get these boxes added to the Red Book. image

I think the boxing champ (pun intended) is the 2006-W burnished Platinum Eagle $50. 2,577 coins minus 1,989 four-coin sets equals only 588 boxes! image

    ................................

I agree $500 is grossly overpriced but some of this is a reflection of the stupid premium being paid for proof AGEs with vs. without OGP and COAs.

I have reccomended in several other posts that people consider picking up buffalo packaging as a cheap speculative play but I didn't see this price coming!

Put a Chinese counterfeit in it and back onto ebay. JMHO

Why else would someone pay that kind of $$ for an empty box ?

I need a box for my 2006 ASE Anniversary set. I lost the box to the 2008 flood. Coins are fine in the capsules though. Anyone got a complete box to sell? LOL

That's crazy. It's like in 93 the assult weapons ban you'd have been better off buying high cap mags for the weapons than the weapons themselves.
  • Wow, my 2008 proof Buffalo's set are all in the individual boxes. To think I was going to get a four coin box for the set to keep them all together. I think I'll hold off.
