refresher, u can acteone a toned coin right?

I have a few nice toners, with tiny lil pvc on the reverse. I want to acetone them to remove the pvc. I just need to make sure the toning will not be affected on the obverse.

Thanks Rob

    I have had no problem at all using acetone on toned coins. Just be sure to rinse when you're done, preferably with distilled water.

    true story....I once had a beautiful bluish turquise Proof Washington quarter that I pulled out of an original 60's proof set. I submitted to NGC and it came back BB for PVC. I like the coin so much I decided to dip it to see if I could clean up the PVC and resubmit. Once I got done dipping the coin in acetone it was blast white image So appearently all the color was due to PVC or plastic contaminants image

    i would frown against using acetone on coins, i use Koinsolv and it is not harmful to the coin nor the toning, will take pcv right off! acetone is a strong corrosive, it can remove metal.
  • I have been using it for about 15 years.....most of the folks on this forum swear by it as well so to say it's a corrosive and removes metal would seem highly inaccurate image

    I'm pretty sure this is not true, but I'm willing to be convinced if you have information you can provide that shows this to be so.

    Acetone will NOT remove metal, but it will melt plastic, so dont dip your slabs :}

    I've acetoned every toned coin I've ever had and then was able to artificially create the exact same toning as before. It's really cool, I'll provide a demonstration sometime....

    This is just plain factually and chemically incorrect.

    Wow... I need to chime in here as well. Acetone is NOT a corrosive and will NOT remove metal. That is just bad, bad information. Cheers, RickO

    This is the second time I have seen you post this drivel.
    Where did you get your information from?
    Do you even know what the chemical composition of acetone is?
    The next time you see a post regarding acetone, I suggest that you take a look at the ingredients of acetone and maybe get the MSDS on it so you know what you are talking about.
    and Koinsolv is a detergent- do you know what its chemical makeup is?

    I'm pretty sure this is not true, because they sell acetone in metal containers (as well as plastic ones) image. >>

    Remember FECs coin that acetone removed the toning? We're not sure who toned it or whether they used name brand Crayons or not.--Jerry

    I have used acetone on coins to remove PVC, oils, glue residue, varnish, and paint. Soaking for hours on end with no damage to the surface metal.
