I really like 1807 draped bust halves

fishteethfishteeth Posts: 2,264 ✭✭✭✭✭
For some reason I have always been drawn to coins from 1807. Most likely this is due to draped bust coins of 1807 often being the
most available and inexpensive. Many type collectors are very thankful for the coins from 1807.
For the past 2 yrs I have been accumulating 1807 bust halves. For many years there was only ten Overtons for the 07 draped bust, then Baley on the
Boards had to go and find a new one (O115), a few yrs ago.
My plan is to try and accumulate O101-O110 in decent VG-VF condition. This has been more difficult than I had thought. Goes to show how even a "common"1807
draped bust coin is anything but common.

Post your 1807 bust halves, love looking at them.

  • 1807 halves share a characteristic common to 1805 and 1806, in that a few die marriages are extremely common and the rest are mostly unavailable. For '07, O.102, O.105 and O.110 are extremely common, followed closely by O.103 and O.109. These 5 die marriages constitute perhaps 90% of the available 1807 DBHs. The other 6 marriages can be very frustrating and it may take 10 years or more to finish the set.
    This is an O.104.

I agree with Slumlord, the O102's and O105's are the only ones I ever seem to find.
The nice thing about the O102 is that it seems to be the one variety of the year that usually has a great strike.
The O105 become a little more challenging in the a version, still trying to find one.

here is another O102 that wasn't in the group shot, also including a close up of the O103 (my favorite)

  • Winston, that is one very nice original crusty DBH you have their, I really like it.image

Edited to add: I cant seem to attend a coin show without picking up a DBH like these for about $200. They arent real common, but I tend to see maybe half a dozen in this kind of condition, and always have to go home with one. Im a DBH junky too fish!

I was fortunate enough to have that coin offered to me by TomB. It’s really his eyes that deserve the credit. I’ll just take credit for being smart enough to buy everything that Tom offers me image Thanks for the compliment on the coin.

    Love these older threads
    Here is an 1807 O-106
Major diagnostic is the upper berry is half buried in the leaf and (thanks Nysoto) the lowest berry is between the serifs of the A in AMERICA.
This is the third use of this obverse die and is evident in the shallow relief compared to the reverse die.

Nice looking coins! It's nice that there are a couple in the series (like the 1807) that are accessible to collectors of average means. Here's mine:

Wow, DarkStar! MS62? Can you describe the luster and patina?
  • DarkStarDarkStar Posts: 463 ✭✭✭✭✭
It's in the sdb, but I'll try to reconstruct. It's not terribly flashy but there's some cartwheel, iirc. The portrait is exceptionally frosty and super attractive imo, which I think shows up well in the picture. The peripheral color, which doesn't show up particularly well in the photos, is blue/purple and rather more attractive in person. I'm not sure I'd bet my life savings that it's completely original though. The surfaces are quite clean except for a scratch in the star field above the eagle's head and a planchet flaw in the left obverse field opposite s1. The strike is pretty good but not full. I think this is a common O-105. It's genuinely uncirculated I think, and resides in a PCGS 62 holder. In person most people's reaction is somewhere between "huh!" and "nice".
