You paid "what" for "that"?

Does anyone else consider their hobby coins against other things that one has to pay for.

Say, when one is getting a new set of tires for your light truck. That's like putting a Liberty Eagle on my truck.

Property Taxes? That's like one really nice double eagle sent to the county.

A new, fancy kitchen remodel? A leading registry set.

Plumbing problem needs to be fixed? Gotta throw a few Wiener Medals at that.

Anyone else play this little game?

I don't even want to think what the interest on my mortgage could get me, numismatically speaking...

Actually, I play the game in reverse. The $1,400 I just dropped on a 1920-S Buffalo nickel could have purchased a couch and side chair. Clearly I need to get me priorities in order.

I admit that do this all the time, and have for a long time. Even if it's just dinner out, I can't help myself; I subconsciously put it into "coin value". I'm glad I'm not the only one. image

Always on one's mind when funds are scarce. While some things are a necessity, many of the things we spend big $$ on just depreciate or get outdated. If you bought well, at least you should be able to get all or most all of your money if the need to sell comes along. Mite even turn a profit. I guess it would be nice to have both the coins and the toys and the top of the line amenities.

  • Yep, all the time.

Whenever I spend money on something other than coins, I imagine what kind of coin I could have purchased with the same amount of money.

That brings back a lot of memories of when I quit if I remember right the first year bought almost a whole registry set.
Now I have an idea why I have so many of them now.
Going on fourteen years the first of the year.

The money I spend on college tuition/dorm/books a year could've bought me an 1895 $1 in PR64 image

Maybe I'm a little screwed up but I'd rather have the truck.

As for comparing hobby coins with other 'necessities' which are purchased?

    No, I never do this.

Otherwise I'd have a new truck! image

  • I don't think in terms of how many coins. However, when I was little I did think in terms of how many Reese's peanut butter cups (candy). At least I had my priorities in order ....

I never do that. I keep my priorities straight and I pay for necessities as necessary and coins as they come along. No conflict. Cheers, RickO

I lost my 1909S IHC VF twice this year buying tires for my wife's jeep and my truck. My 1877 IHC will be put off next year for a $2K much needed repair for my truck. Repairs and maintenance suck.

I play this game only with moderns. When I see a modern go for moon money I say boy I could have bought a classic this or that!
  • All the time, I'm always getting pressured to buy a new professional grade gas range for the kitchen, in my mind that's an ms 65 Lafayette Dollar!
  • It hurts to buy things in life you have to buy, when you could be putting it towards the coins you want. New fridge because the old one went out, health insurance, Auto insurance, that sort of thing.
