1916 MS65RB ripe for an upgrade?

This is in an old rattler and is the nicest 65RB I've ever owned and maybe the nicest I've ever seen. The colors and luster on this one are fantastic and my pictures, while ok, do not do them full justice. I'm putting together an order now and wondering, do you feel it's worth a shot at an upgrade? I'll kick it off by saying that's a sweet coin and I love the rattler. Having said that, the hit on the reverse will keep that at a 65 so don't lose the holder. Don't be fooled by the sharp strike and detail of the beard, etc. The dies were enhanced in '16 creating these great strikes so you're not going to get a bump for that. PQ for sure though

Tough to tell, the problem with 66 and above grades on toned coins (copper especially) is that the toning can result in subdued luster. That's why you don't see a lot of 66RBs and even fewer 66BNs, even if they're otherwise technically all there.

If you have truly booming luster underneath the toning I'd consider it, otherwise it probably won't upgrade.

Also I've heard rumors that PCGS is very tight on grading these days.

Tough to tell from a photo, but given that a coin in better than MS-65 has to really "move" me, I'd say, nice coin, but the grade is maxed out. Leave it where it is.

66RB's are virtually impossible. I think it's a very nice 65RB

A very nice coin with a great strike. I think it is accurately graded however. Both TPG's are stricter then ever on copper and pretty much anything else too. I think the comments pretty much cover the why.

Ok guys, thanks for the input. To answer the question, there isn't a ding on the rim at 4 o'clock on the reverse, that's part of the holder.

all rattlers(to the best of my knowledge) have some type of "hit" in the holder.

Its an LDS coin, in my experience to really get a 66 with an early lincoln, you have to have that clean look of a newer die.

No. And I think if you sent it in raw it might come back in a BN holder (the risk is small, I think, but real).

I'd keep it the way it is. Very nice coin for the grade, but I think the chances of it upgrading to a 66 are very remote.

I would take the assurance of a stable coin in the 65 OGH over a newer 66 anyday.
