New gold Indian cent discovered! 1905

EagleEyeEagleEye Posts: 7,677 ✭✭✭✭✭
Heritage's FUN Auction just posted a newly discovered 1905 Indian cent in gold.

I just sent my 1890-1909 Attribution Guide to the printer. Just the way things happen, as soon as I finish it, a new discovery is made.

I guess that's why they have 2nd printings. I did get the image of the coin for the cover of the next Longacre's Ledger though.

Any word on where the coin was hiding for the past 104 years? That would be interesting to know as well.

Edited to add: Congrats on your attribution book EagleEye! Look forward to getting my copy soon!

the blurb of the auction does not give any details where the coin came
from and has been hiding all this time. what is the story of where
    it came from?

Awesome, can't wait to see some pics!!!

If this one was hidden for the past 104 years... I guess there is still a small chance an 1908 or 1909 San Francisco gold Indian Cent shows up someday image

Probably found in change years ago.image Must be neat in hand.
  • The Heritage description also includes the other known or thought to exist IHCs in gold.

I found this quote to be quite interesting:

i]1907. Listed in the Judd pattern book, and in Donald Taxay's Catalogue and Encyclopedia [of] U.S. Coins. The 1907 gold Indian cent is currently unlocated.

So if no one has it or it "cannot be located" does it in fact exist? Oooh, the drama!

    Rick,
Heritage has removed the photo from your link, can you post the photo?

Anyone have a photo of the 1915 Lincoln cent struck on a gold planchet intended for the $2-1/2 dollar Pan Pacific gold piece?

It's reputed to be the only Lincoln struck in gold, and Sol Taylor reports it last sold for $30,000 sometime after 1966. I don't know much more about it.

Anyone know who currently owns it, and what it might go for if auctioned off today?

Gold strikings of Proof Indian head cents are, IMHO among the most appealing of all off-metal strikes. Along these, I also count Aluminium strikings of seated coinage (if found without oxidation, which is extremely dificult) and high quality copper examples of gold denominations....

    I can dream, can't I?

    Great discovery!

With Heritage indicating most past sales at this level around $170, I think I'll make a play for this fine specimen.

This coin does raise another question with me. With the introduction of the Lincoln cents a couple of years later, have any Lincoln cents on quarter eagle planchets ever rumored to exist?

  • STONESTONE Posts: 15,275
Yes Dennis. Read one of the posts listed below the Image Rick Snow posted image
  • EagleEyeEagleEye Posts: 7,677 ✭✭✭✭✭
Perhaps we'll find out at the FUN show where it has been all these years. I am surprised it was never even hinted at existing.

If those Chinese counterfeiters are taking notes, now we'll soon see everything struck in gold. 1876-CC Trade dollars on a $20 gold piece, for example.

    Rick,

I'm sure you have studied the various die pairings used in 1905, does this piece carry the die markers of a known set of dies used?

No, it is not a known die variety, but it looks like there are die cracks on the reverse which should pair up with known examples.
