NEWP from the Everett, WA Show... Toned AU58 Capped Bust Half Dime

airplanenutairplanenut Posts: 22,393 ✭✭✭✭✭
This is the only thing I picked up today, and I'm really liking it. It has strong lustre on both sides, and very attractive color, as well. I'll let someone else attribute it and tell me I'm a millionaire, since I'm not one for varieties.

It took a while, but eventually the seller realized who I was, and then introduced himself as Marmac. Glad to get a new coin, more glad to get it from a board member image

The little bit of fuzziness on the right side of the obverse is from a scuffy slab... you know how NGC plastic can be image

Want to buy an auction catalog for the William Hesslein Sale (December 2, 1926). Thanks to all those who have helped us obtain the others!!!

1832 LM-12/V-2 is an R-2. The bulge on the shield is a quick pickup point for the die marriage. Nice images of a pretty coin!

nice indeed! the mushy strike on the obverse would challenge most in a "guess the grade".
  • Nice. How many dealers at this show? Good turn out?

Probably 30-ish. Fair number of people, but I didn't see if there was a lot of buying going on. Not much material that really attracted me, but there were a lot of nice type coins in varying price ranges.

    Nice pick up.
Told Marmac you would likely be by image

Was up there Saturday. His table, imho, had the ONLY goods really were buying (well, there were 2 EAC guys that had some nice raw early coppers, but you should really know your stuff there, I believe).

Someone should ask Swampboy about 2 gold deals he heard about (psssttt....mention "Snidely Whiplash" for one of them image )

I picked up 3 coins and sold 1 Lincoln C&C Set. The only 3 coins I picked up, that I liked, in 3+ hours there were from Marmac as well. I need to get them imaged soon. One will be a real bugger to image though...toned Franklin tilted in PCGS plastic.

We warned Marmac that Jeremy would be by to rip him image

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

Indeed. I was just about to say I would never have guessed AU58. In fact, I'll admit I probably would have said VF25 based on Liberty's hair, or XF-something based on the eagle's feathers.

VF's don't usually have cartwheel lustre image

Nor does your photo, fine though it is. Perhaps if I had seen the coin in hand I would have had a different initial impression as far as "guess the grade" goes.

    Sweet coin, regardless.

Oh, BTW, I am sorely disappointed that I didn't win that Brit India rupee you had listed. I had a snipe set at what I considered near-nosebleed price and I still lost it- apparently it surpassed my snipe amount long before snipertime kicked in. I wanted it pretty bad but it looks as though somebody else wanted it even worse. image

Nice acquistion Jeremy, and typical Everett show... Only really two big ones each year there - and they are worth going to. Some of the Kent shows can be fun as well. Russ usually shows up at those. Cheers, RickO

I can never completely accurately tell luster in a slab in a circulated coin..

me too...I am not familiar with which coins in this series are know for weak strikes....the coin doens't look close to AU but I understand that as stuck in MS it might only have like EF40 details. I like the toning a lot image

Nice addition Jeremy and a good set of photos. The strike on these early little coins are often uneven and weak in areas. For grading luster and the overall details on each side are important to observe. On your piece for example the stars show nice detail on the lower obverse stars but are weaker towards the top. The reverse details have similar pick up areas such as the leaves showing definition and separation on the wreath. The variety bulge at the shield also makes it more difficult if one isn't familiar with the variety.

    Nice pick up.

Pretty coin! The appearance of a buckled shield on the rev is pretty cool.

I went for the color shots on this one. When the lustre isn't full (bright uncirculated coin), it's usually a big trade-off for lustre or color in a photo. You can see some of it to the left of the bust, but it also doesn't help that half of the obverse wasn't well lit because of the scuffs. If I get a chance I can try to shoot a set of photos just for the lustre.

    << <i>Nice acquistion Jeremy, >>

Now I know it's a great coin... RickO complimented a toner! image
