Ron Burgundy, reporting live from the Chicago Sun Times Show......

Hallo gents, hope all is well. Wanted to file a brief report after day one of the Chicago show. Overall, vintage is in the room but I'm having to do more digging than last year, when I found quite a bit of stuff. One of PSA's biggest submitters beat me to some nice 57's and I wanted to clobber him, but oh well, Burgundy will get over it. My strategy is different than past shows, as I'm tired of rooting through box after box to find NM-MT 60's commons that are barely worth the price of the card + grading fee.

Deals can be made. Because of the economy dealers are having to back off of their rigid pricing schemes. I've gotten some good stuff cheap.

I'll be back with more later tonight or tomorrow! Throw some questions my way if you want, I'll be able to post some from the show.

I about bull rushed this one dude when I saw him rooting through those 57's that were destined for my hands. image Hey, I tried the skates but security confiscated them.

I have picked up some nice stuff, some of it will be going straight to PSA to see what they think............... image

Oh well, I guess the room will be cleaned out before I get there for Sunday. Is anyone meeting up at the show? Burgandy, if you're going to be around and would like to meet up, let me know. I'll be there all day Sunday.

As someone who has not been to a show in over 10 years, what is a show this size like? About how many tables/dealers? Are these dealers like the local card shops and want full book for modern or 90's cards that would be lucky to grade a 7 or 8?

Hey Ron-----------What % of dealers do you think have cherry-picked the best gradeable stuff and those cards never see the light of day at a show? Or do a large % of them still not get the grading thing and roll them out like any other cards? Thanks.

Just got back from the show, and a fine dinner out with two board members (Jason and Russ, 'morgoth' and 'onefastalon' respectively on the boards). For my purposes, the show basically sucked. Lots of EX-MT 1956-1974 at full book prices, lots of '09 Greg Jennings refractors at full book plus, and lots and lots and LOTS of trash. By trash I mean real flea market stuff- '92F Tom Glavines, '88T Eric Davis', etc. etc. I saw more 'ten cent boxes' than I ever have before at a major show. I also had a guy who wanted me to haggle with him over the prices in his 'blowout box', although at least that was entertaining.

If you're looking for hard to find '90's inserts, or oddball '80's issues, there's almost nothing to choose from. Also no '91 Desert shield, '96 TC BKB refractors, or anything else that I was really hoping to find. You could probably make a few bucks by binder diving for NM-MT vintage commons, but I didn't go that route. I was looking for non-GU, non-autoed high end modern cards, and from that perspective the show wasn't worth attending.

Just curious - when did you start referring to yourself in the 3rd person?

    I haven't been to a show in 5 yrs - good luck.

    How about some pictures.

I believe Ron Burgandy was the name of the lead character in 'Anchorman', so when Tom refers to himself as 'Ron' he's making a play on the occupation held by the man who made the name famous, since reporters refer to themselves in the 3rd person quite a bit (almost as often as NFL cornerbacks, if that's possible).

Wait, you mean Ron Burgundy isn't a 1970's newscaster from San Diego who has since retired to the PSA card collecting message boards? Well color me surprised! All of those times we had together, "Tom" are now worthless. We're THROUGH!!!!

Went today. You are correct in stating that vintage was the name of the game. For those of us who grew up on the 1980s and later material, we were left out in the cold. Anyway, my main intention was to get autographs. Went to get Mike Schmidt, Brooks Robinson, and Ralph Kiner. Left with Schmidt only as I decided against the others. Schmidt was a pretty quiet guy. Very nice auto and a free inscription to boot.

Another good thing is that my son got some pretty nice SpongeBob SquarePants plush toys (SpongeBob, Patrick, and Mr. Krabs) and I got card supplies at a great price image .

Quick update: good show, not as much luck as last year but was able to negotiate hard on some stuff. Will post what I did not submit. Lots of people griping at PSA, not sure why. Definitely some stuff is cherry picked during dealer setup, just like the National. The vultures - me included- were out in full force.

Had a great time with Russ and meeting Guy (Boo) who was very funny and informative. Below are the two vintage cards I picked up. I sold my old Clemente RC so getting one this nicely centered was made my day.

Show was disappointing in some regards. Pricing was better but dealers were grumpy and trading and their buying was off IMO. Too many tables of autoed cards and new stuff and not enough non high end (afforadable) graded vintage. When you can't find common HOFs from the 60s but row after row of E cards and Ramly's is odd to me.

Alot more graded football than I have ever seen. I was still unable to get any of the last 28 cards I need for my graded 71 FB set. It seems 1969 is the unsaid cutoff for "vintage" football.

Sorry to hear the show did not yield much for you. You did not miss much up here last week BTW.

Yep yep.. the show wasn't terrible for me but it would seem that I've been to slightly better Sun Time's Shows in the past.
On the bright side, there were more tables set up than at the last one.... but that didn't equate to more 'quality.'

I was after a few '75s (baseball) to complete a set, but I knew going in that I had little chance of seeing PSA 8+ commons... so not too disappointed.
I did pickup a hand full of high-grade raw singles though, mostly low-pop hard-to-find commons... so my over-all spending stayed pretty low.
I did pick up a NICE '79 Topps Ozzie Rc that appears to be a solid 8 with an outside shot at an 8.5 or a 9... for the $5 special, it was worth a shot.

Steve (BBCE) did NOT have a booth this year... that was kind of a bummer... but oh well.

...and, I'm sorry to report... I was not able to find any Chris Sabo's this year. image

Getting a chance to run into a board member is always nice too, Thanks Again Boo!

... but still, MY favorite part of the Sun Time's Show has always been Giordano's afterwords! There's nothing like it around Indy that I've found!

ALWAYS Looking for Chris Sabo cards!

It's weird that Steve (BBCE) wasn't there considering that the show is so close for him.

Also, the one time I was in Chicago for the National (possibly 2003?), there was a Mexican restaurant near the convention center named Maria's that I remember being very good. I wonder if it is still there.

Very nice pickups Jason - that's a very nicely centered Clemente and super looking Cobb!

    Good luck on the cross-over.

I've had so many "interesting" conversations with Boo - if he invited me to dinner? It would consist of a bag of Cheetos and an RC cola. image

Seriously, he's one of the more astutely intelligent people I've talked to here over of the years at CU.

First and foremost, thank you Ron Burgundy for the binder of unauthenticated autographs you sold me some months back! I took the 4 key 8x10's (Mickey Mantle, Ted Williams, Willie Mays & Hank Aaron) to PSA for authentication and all 4 came back authentic! The $235 spend on authentication fees was steep, but well worth it when they all came back good.

I enjoyed the show, probably scanned each table 5 or 6 times over the weekend... although I spent most of my time in the back doing signings for a side-venture I've been doing for 5 years now. Overall, was a little disappointed with the quality of product available... quantity was definitely there. I know it's football and basketball season right now, but if you collect modern baseball... quality items were few and far between.

Unfortunately for me, the main dealer that had product I was looking for was 707 Sportscards. Nothing beats finding cards to fill several holes in my collection and having to walk away empty handed because I couldn't recognize the favor they were doing for me by haggling down to only 25-50% above market price... ughh!

Was able to pick up another STL Cardinals T206 (Steve Evans) for my team set... a probably 9 (minus a slight surface wringle that i'll probably drop it to a 6) Jerry Kramer rookie... a 2009 Bowman Chrome Percy Harvin autographed rookie... a PSA 10 Pacific Brett Favre rookie for my registry set... and the following three cards to now put my PSA 8 Hank Aaron Basic registry set and 50% complete!!!

I can't imagine she attended. Shes liquidated a large part of her collection recently to focus on a business venture.

I enjoyed the show. One dealer was trying to tell me that I wouldn't believe the prices he sold a 2001, 2002 and 2003 Heritage set of baseball cards. I told him that surprised me because prices have come down quite a bit on Ebay, and he replied that "Ebay doesn't matter, you can't rely on that."

There were some tables with boxes of 50-cent modern cards. I picked up quite a few black refractors, X-fractors and old Frank Thomas inserts.

I echo the comments from others regarding the show. It looks like the shows continue to die a slow death. It looks like some of the high end raw dealers have finally been driven out of the market due to falling prices on graded cards and their ever increasing prices for thier raw NM+ cards. Not much to highlight in the way of purchases. Picked up a handful of nice '71 commons from Set Builders and a PSA 9 1967 Tommy John. I did drop off my bulk submission to PSA to save some shipping costs and also had a few CC grading credits which I used for review. I didn't get a bump on my PSA 8 '71 Blyleven, though I disagree with the reason it didn't bump. I did get a SGC 92 '65 Carlton RC to cross to a PSA 8.5. I had bought it on eBay a few weeks ago for <$200 from a seller who forgot to mention it was graded until the last day of the auction.

Steve wasn't at the show last year either. I think he once told me that he only does the National and Philly.
