Time to reprise this 1914-S Buffalo nickel

I haven't shown this in a couple of years. It's raw, but not for long--sending in tomorrow. It's one of my favorite pieces, and up there for a '14-S.

What grade do YOU think it will bring?

Either a body bag for AT, or MS64. I personally see it as MS65.

• Sublime! I see this coin as being above 65. Thank you for the display.

66!
There is no "AT" or "NT". We only have "market acceptable" or "not market acceptable.

• WOW, thats a real GEM, I do hope you are not rejected in your aspirations. Mine would be high for that coin. The delta between 65 and 66 is not small, I would be looking for 66 with that coin and be depressed with 65. Personally I think its all of 66 with a shot higher.....good luck, let us know.

I don't know where they came up with that grade image

There must be some stuff that isn't showing in the images.

I think the MS61 and MS62 grades on these hint that there may be a bit of friction wear, but not necessarily from circulation. It emits a slight air of uncertainty about the coin. Just my opinion.

The obverse is hammered but the reverse is WEAK at best! Still a nice coin and I would think you could get no less than 63 ask for this nickel.

Did you send them your photography work? Apparently they aren't seeing what we are seeing. Great coin and great photos.

Believe it ----If they grade any coin with COLOR--- they are extremely cautious with the grade --- 1 or 2 points under. And yes I feel the reverse for the date is weakly struck !!!image

You called it MS64 the first time I showed it, a couple of years back:
http://forums.collectors.com/messageview.cfm?catid=26&threadid=608142&highlight_key=y&keyword1=1914-S
So what you're saying in regard to the color is, if I flash-dip the toning off it and resubmit, the 1-2 point demerits will be gone, and it could go MS65 or MS66. Right?
image
Just kidding, Ed. I know where you're coming from. The superb 1913-S T1 in NGC MS67 (which you've seen) that I just tried to cross, was turned down for artificial color. It's an older NGC holder and hasn't been touched, and the first time I tried to cross it, it was merely "DNC." The inherent PCGS bias/fear about toned coins has probably intensified since your observation of a couple of years ago. Understandable I guess.

Hmmmm... well Guy, it WOULD make an interesting experiment... flash dip and resubmit. You could run a contest and see what comes back. I know where my bet would go. Cheers, RickO

What a beauty. Grade doesn't matter on that one; the eye appeal is killer but I'll go with the 66 crowd! Good luck

I grade this buff 64.25 with A STRIKE DETAIL OF 75% FULL.... this is averaging both the obverse and reverse . Also this coin is 100% NT Am I on to something here??? We will all see on the 25th!image
ed rodrigues
• Are there any light hairlines we aren't able to see that would knock this coin down to a 62? I'm not seeing the problems that PCGS must have seen to give it the grade it received. Light cleaning, wiped surfaces, what???
