Coin Counters at Banks

Don't know about elsewhere in the country, but here in the Northeast there are some regional banks that have free coin counters for the public to use and then turn in the receipt and get currency for no fee......

So my son begs me to take him to the counter, to load in his crappy clad coinage.......low an behold...there are several grown men in front of us loading up the machine as well....

As soon as my son starts to load up the tray and the machine begins counting......it stops....bags are full.

So the attendant comes over, pulls out the machine, opens it up, starts to change bags........

Right in front of him.......the bag of halves has about 10, maybe 20 coins max........FRANKLINS!!!!!!!! Had to be at least 10.......My son tries to compose himself and asks the attandant to buy the halves in the bag.......she says NO.....he can buy halves at the counter......of course they are clad Kennedy's....

Even when asked to switch the one's in the machine (while open) for the same amount of clad Kennedy's from the counter.....again....NO - THESE BAGS GET SHIPPED OUT TO A CENTRAL LOCATION FOR ROLLING......

WHAT? This is nuts. You cant even BUY the halves NO ONE wants. Needless to say, those halves were the talk of the day - we did not get ANY. The are still in that damn machine!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh, I would have went over that attendant's head and talked to someone with some authority at that bank. Depending on my mood, threatening to pull all of my accounts from that bank over the matter would maybe be on the table!

Your best be might be to see if you could have someone hold the bag for you to purchase once it gets filled.

Forgive me for saying so, but you go to one rotten bank. I go to one of the biggest banks in the country, and tellers at a variety of branches have gone out of their way to help me in my collecting pursuits. I think that they would have let me buy those Franklins at face value. In fact, I'm sure of it!

I used to use those exact machines at my bank for free. I would fill them up and they would come out and pull the filled bags and I would go on. I did ask them about the bags and they said they get processed by Brinks or whomever. Anyway she was just following procedure but it is still a bummer.

It was so popular that my bank removed the machine and no longer has the service image

you might be able to fill the bag by depositing at least 1000 half dollars and then ask the bank manager if you can buy an entire bag (containing the silver) from them at face value. I bet that would work.
  • I saw a coin I didn't recognize at that bankand the teller gave it to me. It turned out to be a 2 euro coin. More stupidity at that same bank. We know which one.

I have sen silver dims and quarters in those "bags" and asked but was old no as well. Oh well.

  • Those bags get audited once they go out and much of the time they're short for the foreign coin which the Fed then tosses and debits the bags for. The next time talk to your bank manager and tell him or her you'll take the bag "unaudited." They have their "policy" because it's not good business practice to be shorting customers. I know guys who got $1000 bags that were $30-40 short, easy. Talk to your bank manager, see what you can work out.

Usually, if you go beyond the clerk level, you can get a reasonable response and help. Cheers, RickO
  • Just go there tomorrow with a couple cans of clad halves and dump them in. Then go to the bank manager and let him or her know that you accidentally dumped in coins that were part of a coin collection, and you need him to retrieve them for you. Have another batch of clad halves in your jacket pocket just in case they need the counts to match.
  • I know it is sickening.

The tellers are actually digging out & buying the coins in the back room for face.

    Best not to look........
