New pictures of my new Half Cent

This Half Cent was one of Mark Feld's offerings yesterday morning and I'm glad I saw his email quickly. I now need only 3 more coins for my Basic Design Set. I love the look of it ~ opinions? Want to guess the grade? If you saw his email, don't cheat!!

He'll be sending it to Becoka for better photos, and I'll post them when they're done.

The majority ruled - this is a PCGS MS64RB. Great job!

Ben (BECOKA) just did the photos for this (below) and they're much more true than the auction photos above. It's beautiful in-hand and I'm very happy with it!

  • Honestly, I don't really care for the color. Especially on the reverse.

I think that's just the saturated image....because I too felt the same once I first looked at it image

  • Well, one of you is right! I can't wait to see what Ben can do with photos - I think he'll do better justice to her. And yes, this does have a strong strike.

Sorry Mike - he told me someone asked about it right after I took it, and I was hoping it wasn't someone in here! I'll be kind to her, I promise!

That is a very lovely example!

You got yourself a real looker......

I was eyeballing that one earlier, so I won't ruin your fun with the guess the grade.

Here's what I liked about the coin.

#1 - I know that Mark's pics of copper are not great. The coin always looks better in hand. I expect this coin to be no exception.
#2 - The coin is one small mark on the cheek from a 65. Look at the rims and fields -- those are the rims and fields of a 65 coin, IMO.
    #3 - It's a solid RB.
#4 - Nice solid strike. A bit soft in dentils, but very nice overall.

You got a good coin. Let me know if you ever want to sell it.

Thank you! image These pictures were from the auction, so I know Ben's will be better. I rely on Mark's descriptions as much as the pictures and know I can trust his words to paint the picture. I thought it very strong for the grade but for that obverse hit, and made up my mind in 30 seconds. I like the strike; a lot of what I've looked at have had a soft or weak one, but I was also looking at 63's more than 4's.

GREAT COIN ! TO FIND AN 1853 WITH MORE RED IS VIRTUALLY IMPOSSIBLE

I respect the source where you got the coin. Mark knows his stuff.

That color is pretty much what you get for R&B and even red half cents from this period. It is almost always a bit dull and muted.

I think that this is a really nice original MS-64 piece, and it is far above average from what I've seen offered. Some of them are pretty bad for the grade.

    Well done Mar.
Very lovely and worth a long look.
I recently had a chance to study a few of marmac's MS examples in hand and I must say this series is captivating me.
