I heard some buzz about the culprits being apprehended at the show, but I suppose had they genuinely been caught that this would be darn near front page news by now.

Buzz could have been caused by the thread here or the buzz may be what caused the thread. Anyway, Julian says that they are making progress but no coins have been returned. -Jerry

Was Julian's heist similar to the "Ballon Boy" story--a hoax???

No, the robbery was very real...........The reported recovery of the coins appears to be a hoax.....MJ

No hoax, I promise. The FBI has been very encouraging and I hope to have some good news soon.

Many thanx for all of your kind words and wishes, people. This has been much easier to endure because of your support!!!

...The FBI has been very encouraging and I hope to have some good news soon.

Julian, why is the FBI involved in a theft?

You would have to have a set of low hangers to take stolen coins to a coin show and try and sell them... image

    Exactly...it was a multi-million dollar, interstate crime!

  • I think that everything is now covered....From this and another thread we have now been told about how these types of thefts are investigated, when/where/why Federal agencies get involved and the value that some coin dealers may/may not carry with them.

Anything else to let the thieves in on??????????? Home addresses of dealers???

    Amazing............................................

    Great to hear that, Julian.

i must be going crazy. i clearly remember a thread here stating some
coins were found and julian and his son went to view the stuff.

this place is strange or i am really losing it.

now it seems like no coins have been returned at all.

Now all we need to solve is the insurance problem. Somewhere it was said that the only way the coins would have been insured was if the owner was physically present with the coins during the robbery. I'd like to say that's alot of BS but I guess what is expected, coins must be secured from point A to Point B with no stops in between. 1700 coins has got to be alot of weight, over 100lbs? After lugging them up to the hotel suite, the ins. is only valid as long as the owner stays with them until heading back to the show or home. What a dilemma this must be with every show?

There are a number of other options, including using a courier like Brinks to ship the coins to and from the show. Or having one person go into a restaurant to pick up food, while another tends to the coins in the car. Or eating before you leave the hotel/show, and not stopping for a meal on the way back to your office.

Also, most rare coin/collectible insurance policies are written so as to exclude coverage for losses of the type that occurred. So, assuming that Julian's policy was written that way, it wasn't unfair or "BS" for the insurer to deny the claim.

This is hard to follow, does the eastern dealer get the reward money? Julian should count his lucky stars if and when he gets his coins back from being so lax about there safety.
