Polling what most of you all love to collect

Hey guys, BNB here and I'm curious to know, what is the consensus here on what most of you all love to collect?

Higher end certified coins? Raw coins? 3 Legged buffalo nickels? I'm curious to hear what each and every one of you here has to say!

I personally go for the mid-high range coins like 3 leggers, morgans, gold coins & bullion..

I'm curious to know which raw large cents in particular and what grade generally?
  • It all depends on how much disposable income I have at the time. Sure I'd buy a 3-Legged Buff but will I ever have that kind of money to spend? Probably not. Common date Buffs and mint wrapping is the only stuff I can afford right now image

My favorite is cherrypicking unattributed Morgan VAMs in PCGS holders.
    When in doubt, don't.

That's fine. We all have our ideals.. What is it now that you are currently collecting though?

Because I'm curious to learn about what people here are collecting so I myself know for my own personal inventory.

My collecting interests have changed over time. I started out collecting a hodge-podge of raw US type coins. Anything that I came across that caught my eye. Then after joining this forum, I realized that I was kind of wandering aimlessly and that if I really wanted to build a nice collection, I needed focus on one or two series and buy PCGS or NGC graded coins. One reason is that 80% of the raw coins I submitted came back graded WAY under what I expected, which meant I was losing money. Not good.
So, I decided to concentrate on two series - MS Liberty nickels, and IKE's. The IKE's because if I couldn't afford to get an MS Liberty nickel, I could get a new IKE since they are mostly inexpensive.
I got about 50% complete on the Liberty nickel collection - including lower graded keys, and seperated temporarily from my wife and needed some quick cash so I sold them all to Glenn H.
Then, after I recovered from that (all the while still buying IKE's here and there) I decided to start a PCGS registry US type collection, which is what I am currently working on. And I still have my IKE's.
I decided on the US type set because I think it's a good way to gain general knowledge of US coinage, and they are more interesting for the non-numismatist to look at as well.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it! image

Click the link below, and you can see my current PCGS registry type set. I'm 57.5% complete, and it only took me 3 months to assemble what I have so far.
    Best regards,

    1806 Halfpenny 3 Berries Reverse in MS66RB

I do also collect early US Commems, but mostly mid grades of 64-66.

I picked one up last week from a dealer. An 1878 Rev of 1879 MS63 in an old ANACS holder (small one with green print). I finally got to it today and it's VAM221A... I love finding these things! Now, do I send it in for a crossover, IMO it has a good shot at 64. I'm taking it to a show tomorrow to ask an ex ANACS grader that I deal with for his opinion

I'm going to be very critical.

    (1) We all know you're BNB. Your introduction of "BNB here" sounds like a commercial.
    (2) From your original introduction thread, it appears that you are running an analytical company, and that includes the coin market. I'm wondering if you're trying to learn, or to gain research for your company.

I have collected Lincoln wheaties and Peace dollars for a long time. Maybe 40 years. I've always loved them. But I dabble in CBH's and IHC's. I also collect keys. Okay, so I wander a little. Sue me.

I can go buy a 3 lager but it's a lot funner when you can find a coin in a roll or bag. You wont find a roll with a 3 lager in it but you can find a lot of other coin in rolls. Like the 1960-D Sm Date, I once found 14- D/D DDO Sm over Lg in one roll. I found a lot of DDO and Rev on Jeffersons and Lincoln in rolls it's just something I like to do I'll go through 4,000 nickels in one weekend, Pulling out all the full steps or DDO/DDR, RPM's and so on It just gets me going like my little treasure hunt. But that is just me. I do go out and buy a coin I know I cant find but I do like cherry picking and roll/ bag hunting. image

I do stuff that very few care much about. I'll grab something for a few bucks and have a blast looking for it's history.
One of my quest that I still work on is what I call "The many faces of Lincoln". Stuff like this.

  • I would tell you but it seems that when I talk about my area of interest all of the major dealers are swiftly out of stock. It really makes me wonder.Had my eye on a few particular coins saved the cash for them and now they are gone and they were NOT extremely popular series.image
