What other hobbies do you mix with coin collecting?

airplanenutairplanenut Posts: 22,684 ✭✭✭✭✭
I'm sure many here have multiple hobbies (or obsessions, call them what you like). I'm curious how many of them can be mixed with coin collecting, not including one funding the other.

For those who didn't know, I like airplanes image On my first long solo flight to multiple airports beyond where I did my training, I took a box of coins and headed out to a field near where TomB lives, got out, and spent a few hours playing show and tell with him. My first passenger (and his son) is a board member/dealer, and I've flown with a few other members, as well as to do some in-office work for a dealer who was a bit far away for a drive considering I didn't have a car. I'll fly to a show one of these days...

So, how 'bout you?

I drag race occasionally. I have a 1977 Trans Am that I restored and modified heavily. I also race my 2005 Dodge Ram Daytona pickup occasionally. All my vehicles have nitrous, and the truck has about $4000 worth of stereo in it. I love online gaming, and last year got a 73" Mitsubishi 1080p HDTV and a Playstation3 and upgraded it to a 500GB hard drive, installed surround speakers in my ceiling and added a 12" sub - all to play video games. I have been playing electric guitar since I was 12, and have a 1988 BC Rich Warlock and a Peavey half stack. I love watching movies. I go snowboarding occasionally, when time permits and I can take some time off to do it. My wife and I enjoy buying antiques of all kinds - furnature, dishes, nicknacks.
I need a few more expensive hobbies...

Thanks! 1974 360HP . Not original paint. It was pretty rusty when I got it. It is the original color though- yellow blaze. 727 trans,3.55 9 3/4 rear, AC. The build sheet says it had special paint and was picked up at the factory. I did the motor to look original but did bump up the compression and a few other things that are not noticeable 13.7@ 100MPH. I did install a 125HP nitrous but with all the BS this summer I never got to try it at the strip. image

For collecting I like space memorabilia from the 1957-72 era... basically Mercury, Gemini, Apollo (MGA) and early Soviet material. Just as coins have a given number of date/mm within a given series, I'm trying to put together a "Flown" series of material from the MGA flights, 27 flights in total (6, 10 and 11 respectively). At this point I've got material from 16 flights (3, 5, and 8 respectively) including 2 of the 3 "keys" of the series. I would call the 3 "keys" Alan Shepard's Freedom 7 (first American in space), John Glenn's Friendship 7 (first American to orbit the earth), and Apollo 11 (first Moon landing). I own a piece of the Atlas booster (recovered in east Aftrica, ex: Deke Slayton collection) that launched Friendship 7 and a (2-sided) page of the log of Apollo 11. I have yet to see anything that was flown on Freedom 7 up at auction. Oftentimes there is a nice crossover between numismatics and space memorabilia. Here is a Roosevelt that was on Gus Grissom's Liberty Bell 7 flight, the second US space flight.

I also collect fine art... stuff like Ukiyoe (Japanese wood block prints) and paintings by CA. plein air artists such as Granville Redmond, Clarence Hinkle, Donna Schuster etc.

As to outdoors kind of hobbies I like to ski, both downhill and crosscountry, hike, and fish.

I never have figured out how to send pictures (don't have any good coin images anyway) but I drag race a '72 Duster (340 CI, .30 over, stock stall and 3.23 gearset) runs 13:40's with a best of 13:16), I fish, bowl and have raise Birmingham Roller Pigeons (a performing breed) all my life since the age of 9 (soon to be 65). The many interests keeps things interesting. I'm also involved with a Bible study group.

Nice rides everyone. Sure brings it all back. I sold all my cars at the peak in 03. Just seemed like it was the right thing to do since I can't drive anymore and I had no place to store them safely.

As far as Jeremy s question, the only correlation between my my coins and my main activity hobby of RC planes and 3D heli's is merrily as a source of weightimage Laterally balancing an RC electric plane normally requires about a penny or two of weight, and cents are the cheapest prefabbed thing going. Cheaper than a washer and easier than hammering lead. image

  • Green sand metal casting. Mostly aluminum (because it's so very cheap) but occasionally copper. I'll experiment with anything that melts at under 2000 degrees and doesn't cost a fortune. All my casts to date have been melted over charcoal/wood and poured from steel coffee cans. Finer equipment would easily produce finer results, but I get a real kick out of the down and dirty DIY method.

    Here's where I learned a lot of what I know: backyardmetalcasting.com.
