1921 Peace $1 with Dreadlocks?

BroadstruckBroadstruck Posts: 30,497 ✭✭✭✭✭
Besides being polished with silver paste to death this 21 Peace $1 is struck like a MOOSE. But the hair details just do not look right to me as it's struck better then a 21 Matte or Satin Proof.

Comments greatly appreciated... thanks in advance! image

I've never seen one quite like that... Is it tooled to have more hair detail?

Looks like it had extensions added or a slight weave image

It looks like a Proof Striking - its hammered !!
Also looks played with - post mint damage-Dreadlocks ? LOL

I also have been looking for a fully struck 1921 Peace -
as it was my Mom's birthyear - and I want a special coin.
As we know, 99.9% of these 1921s' are mush on the hair details... image

  • I don't think I've ever seen a more strongly struck 21-P, including the reverse. I don't see how it could have been tooled, which involves taking some metal off or moving it around. Tooling doesn't add metal.

    Any possibility it's a fake?

I was thinking that might also be a possibility, but looks more like it was left to soak in Rogaine Hair Regrowth Formula image

I think it's been worked...or photo-shopped. I've had a dozen of these in various states, including a business strike on proof dies (below). The hair details are unnatural for a '21.

Could it be a metal impurity running across the hair or a lamination there?

I've seen 1921 Peace $1 with a lamination in this region.

The most memorable was an example Anaconda had that was deep purple blue with a pink central lamination.

This does not look like a lamination to me.

Herewith I'd like to attempt to introduce into the CU Forum Lexicon of Alphabet Soup Abbreviations™, "RFR," for "Run, Forrest, Run!"

Looks like the tool that tooled this didn't seem to know where the rest of the hair should go, as it really doesn't match the satin proof on Heritage's site very well. Also, the lowest curl on the cheek and the one forward of it seem to have less definition than on the proof specimen. Too bad, as it was probably pretty well struck to begin with.

    RFR.

Yep, thats what I was thinking. It looks too good to be true as do most of the coins sold by this seller.

    Just looked up the seller...here.

At least the look of all of his (gender assumption) dollars is the same! image

It's hard to tell if it has been tooled from the images...nonetheless...danger, Will Robinson, danger!

It never ceases to surprise me how coins like this sell for that money...oh, well.

  • This seller has sold thousands of "enhanced" coins. I dont even look at his stuff anymore. It's funny how I knew it was one of his coins... well, not really, all of his stuff is messed with. If you cover up the long hit as in this photo it looks normal to me.
