At this rate of rise, the set will be worth at least $2634 this time next week.

I expect $300 or more by Thanksgiving and close to $400 by Christmas. The limit one per household is really going to help this set fly.

I do not see a top much

    over 220 by Christmas.

    Then a return to 120 - 140.

The set is nice, the packaging

is indeed of value, but the coins

    within are not rare.

So I lucked out and the Mint says they shipped me one. (I was on the waiting list initially).

Realistically, what should we do with these sets? I'm guessing it should be flipped at the
prices you all are talking about. After all, as Bear points out, there's no NEW coins in this set.

I believe it will always carry a premium just like the Mint Wrapped LP1s. I'm sure some of the 50,000 will be cracked out for submissions, which makes the original set even more scarce. Not to mention any other possible scenario that may happen to an unlucky fellow (water damage of some sort, kids getting a hold of it somewhow etc- yeah it seems unlikely but I'm sure something along those lines will happen to someone)

The prices on these sets will go up for a while, but then collectors will turn the page, and they will settle down, probably at $10 to $20 over the issue price in a couple of years.

How would these compare with say the 1999 Silver Proof set? I can't recall the details of why that set stayed high but I believe it did have an ordering limit which kept it mostly in the hands of collectors vs in dealers inventories.

I'm wondering if the fact that many people who ordered the set and were put on a waiting list but whose sets are now being shipped out will have any effect on the value of these...truth be told, many people paying big bucks last weekend on ebay for pre-sale auctions could have ordered a set from the Mint at the purchase price and gotten one. I ordered mine on October 18, and it was shipped out yesterday.

My order # was 33238XXX..frankly, I was surprised to receive the e-mail from the Mint saying it was shipped. I almost bought one last Sunday on ebay for $160. I'm glad now I didn't.

I'd bet that many of those buyers bought sets on ebay figuring there was no way they'd get one from the Mint, once the waiting list went up. In any case, it is very unusual, IMO, for all these waiting list orders to be processed so quickly...every other time I've been on a waiting list for a Mint product, I waited amonth only to get a cancellation notice. If all the units were sold out by last weekend, how can the Mint possibly be fulfilling orders like mine that were place two days after that?? Did they cancel thousands of orders on their end? Or are they producing more units than stated?

WS: The SFMS68 prices were based upon the 8 pc. sets the Mint was selling for the past few months (and the coins in those sets were just average). Then, in the last month, the 2009 Mint sets have come along, chuck full of MS68SF Pres $1's. $250 becomes $125 as you note. $125 becomes sub-$100 real soon IMHO. Nothing really matters except MS69 specimens. Most of the MS68SF coins are just the by-product of the hunt for MS69's. Kind of like mining for gold and finding a little silver along the way.

My guess is many people placed multiple orders which were subsequently cancelled, thereby making room for those on the waiting list.

Yes, he was looking for a tight seal. He must have had a lot of leftovers from the Lincoln Coin and Chronicles Set (LN6) party.

    Grote15: 33238000
    1st order: 33159000

They took about 79,000 orders; does that mean a lot of people got canceled or there were alot of none LN6 orders?

I think a lot of people didn't pay attention to the one-per-household limit and attempted to order multiple sets without the charade of separate accounts, credit cards, and different billing/shipping addresses.

The website wouldn't let you complete your order if you had two of them in your cart. I had two different browsers open trying to get one of them to finish the process and as a result I had two in my cart and it told me I had to remove one.

<< <i>I believe it will always carry a premium just like the Mint Wrapped LP1s. >>

The big difference here is that mint wrapped means "unseen/unsearched" as in OBW whereas the coins in the Lincoln Sets are easily seen for what they are.

<< <i>I'm sure some of the 50,000 will be cracked out for submissions, which makes the original set even more scarce. >>

Logic like this is what is fueling the current craziness but it still does not change the reality of the set. Not a single unique coin exists in the set and this is what will eventually bring the prices down. Once the demand is filled, the prices will recede as there is absolutely nothing rare or unique about this one, just an assemblage of proof coins in a different wrapper.

No comparison at all since the coins in the 1999 Silver Proofs sets were ONLY available in those sets. The Lincoln Coin & Chronicles sets has the Lincoln Commemorative Proof (which was initially available on 2/12/2009) and 4 Lincoln Proof cents (which were initially available on 6/1/2009).

The 1999 Silver Proof sets went on sale in 1999 at a much higher price than their non-silver counterparts and was essentially a new product. Lots of folks ordered only the minimum amounts to satisfy their specific needs. The set was again offered as a two-set package in 2001 (one 1999 SPS and one 2000 SPS) but the sets had been stored in a really bad location and received a lot of corrosive damage. Many were returned and subsequently destroyed by the mint as unsellable. The mint also received a lot of flack regarding selling proof sets "off-year" but the net result was that there just were not that many 1999 Silver Proofs Sets sold to either dealers of the public. Once that was realized, then a buying wave began building and the sets were commanding as much as $450 each. That wave has ended but there is still a hefty premium attached to the 1999's.

If you are referring to Lincol Cent collectors, I just do not buy this argument since the set will not fit into a Dansco or even a Whitman and has absolutely no place in any Lincoln Coin collection. Its just a purty package with a lot of hype attached to it.
