Has anyone ever seen a SLQ proof or know of one?

I've always wish SLQ's were made a proof series.

I can't even imagine what a cameo proof would look like.

The Ex- Jimmy Hayes 1916 Pattern Standing Liberty Quarter sold about 4-5 years ago at Heritage it was in a Proof 65 holder.

Although there are rumors of proof or specimen strikes of 1916 and 1917 SLQ's the coin above is the only one confirmed as an actual proof.

Justacommemman would be disappointed with that 1916 Proof Standing Liberty quarter because it is a Matte Proof with uniformly dull surfaces. The "cameo" surface would be on the entire coin with no brilliant surface in sight.

I think that Jay Cline might also have one, to my knowledge 3 exist and they are all Matte Proofs, there were no Cameo proofs struck of SLQs. A couple of the coins that have been attributed as proofs are actually patterns.

Would it be something if the government offered this coin along with the 1916 one, five, ten and fifty cent pieces in a commemorative proof set dated 2016 in a few years. With todays technologies this set would rock and roll..

Someone across the street (Bob) actually came up with a GREAT article written by RWB on the subject. On page 4 there is a rendering of what one may of looked like. Amazing.....thanks Just Bob!

No mirror proofs were made of SL quarters for collectors. With two exceptions, all pattern pieces were struck as satin proofs on a medal press.
1) Exception. The first small batch of patterns were struck from dies with polished fields (similar to the imitations sold commercially). The polishing was of poor quality and in some instances eroded the designs. There are 2 examples in the NNC in Washington, DC.
2) At least one pattern piece was struck on a production press. It has a satin surface. This is the ex Jimmy Hayes coin and it is one of the few instances of there being documentation referring to production of this coin.

By definition, a pattern proof would have been struck on a medal press, not production press. Therefore, I would not call the Hayes coin a “proof.” It hardly matters since the coin is unique.

Speaking of SLQ"S, I just missed this at NE Numismatics, maybe just a great shot but to my mind the nicest I have eseen, for a 65, would have loved to have it.

There is a 17-D Ty-1 in the Mitchelson collection that is remarkable in all respects - it must have been one of the first pieces off new dies.
